Great Attendance at Initial Discussions; More Meetings in March
As a follow-up to last week’s article, Councilor Matthews and I met with twelve individuals at the first Community Conversation at the Coos Bay Public Library on Wednesday at 11 a.m. This conversation centered around The Devereux Center relocation and included input from those who had concerns about the identified location, challenges around information related to the building acquisition, and the move. There were also individuals who shared support for the services that The Devereux Center provides within the community. A member of a community service provider and a board member from The Devereux Center were also in attendance. It was a good first conversation and opened the door to rethinking the next Community Conversation venue scheduled for March 6, 2024, at 6 p.m. This gathering has been moved from the Library to the Egyptian Theatre.
We also held our first Livability Committee meeting on Thursday during the noon hour at City Hall. There was great attendance for an initial meeting with 28 people in attendance plus panel members. The group collectively discussed the member composition, future meeting topics, meeting date and time. Several ideas surfaced including the next topic of focus: components of livability and the underlying challenges. The group in attendance was very solutions oriented, grassroots based, neighborhood connecting, and community strengthening. The next meeting of this group will be March 28, 2024, at 12 p.m.
I am hoping you will join one or both group meetings as we all share and learn.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay
