The photos above are from the recently completed Restaurant O project in the Downtown District.
The Urban Renewal Agency (URA) of the City of Coos Bay offers a grant program for commercial property owners in the Downtown and Empire districts. This program helps to revitalize these crucial focal points for our community by bringing new life to buildings. The Agency allocates grant funds each year, available on a first-come-first-served basis. Grant funds are available for up to 50% of the project costs and generally are limited to $25,000. However, the Agency uses discretion in variance from that maximum. In the case of Restaurant O, they were granted $138,265.80, which was 75% of the project cost. The Tioga, Hall Building, and several Front Street locations are other exceptions in the funding amount the Agency has approved. We encourage property owners to think larger than 50% or $25,000 when applying for improvement grants.
Several improvement projects have been supported over the decades the URA has been operating. We appreciate the property owners willing to invest in their building while partnering with the Agency on its efforts to remove blight and encourage development. For more information on the program, including the annual reports highlighting the projects funded and other financial data, you can visit the City’s website: Urban Renewal and Improvement Program. This page also provides a map of the two districts, which can assist with determining if your commercial building is within the Downtown or Empire District.
For more information on the program, contact Christine Sylvester at 541-269-8912 or csylvester@coosbay.org.
