Wide Variety of Benefits From Southwestern Oregon Community College
The City of Coos Bay has enjoyed a long-standing and successful partnership with Southwestern Oregon Community College. Our community is lucky to have access to quality education right in our midst. Having Southwestern in Coos Bay brings benefits of affordable continuing education through degree and certification programs that can fit anyone’s schedule and financial capacity. Couple these benefits with the wide variety of community classes in fields like art, fitness, and nature rounds out the educational experience. Southwestern also offers coursework to help individuals obtain their GED, workforce training opportunities to expand knowledge and skills, along with resources to support small business and entrepreneurs. The Oregon Coast Culinary Institute (OCCI) also brings world-class culinary education to the community, conveniently located on Southwestern’s Coos Bay campus. Recent additions to the Coos Bay campus include a new health and science building bringing focused educational opportunities in science, engineering, and health care.
The next step in Southwestern’s continuing investment in our community is the new fire tower training facility. Over the last several weeks, the old fire tower was demolished, paving the way for the new facility. Site work is now underway with construction slated to start in December and completion planned for winter 2024 (rendering shown below). Southwestern trains approximately 25 students each year to become professional firefighters and many of the students live at local fire stations, training alongside professional fire teams. Coos Bay has a long history of housing student firefighters and appreciates the local access to a training tower at Southwestern which helps to keep fire crews and engines in town, rather than traveling to training.
For more information about the programs available at Southwestern, visit their website (https://www.socc.edu/) and for more information about the Coos Bay Fire Department visit the Department’s page on the City’s website (https://www.coosbayor.gov/government/city-departments/fire-department). Below are some photos of the demolition and a rendering of the new fire tower.
