At this week’s City Council meeting, we presented Rodger Craddock with an appreciation plaque acknowledging his 32 years of service with the City of Coos Bay. Being the longest serving city manager for Coos Bay, with 14 years in the role, Rodger has been instrumental in several projects making it to the finish line including Fire Station #1, the Visitor Information Center, and the Wastewater Treatment Plant #2 to name just a few. Every member of City Council, including myself, took the opportunity to thank Rodger for his dedication to the community throughout his time with the City. We acknowledged the number of hours he gave in service to the City, without the limits of a standard workday, his efforts stretched into his personal evening, weekend hours, and even into his vacations. Rodger’s tireless commitment built a strong and deep team of experienced professionals with a focus on supporting the citizens of Coos Bay.
Following acceptance of the plaque, Rodger also shared a few thoughts about what his roles with the City of Coos Bay have meant over the years. As City Manager, he attributed that his success was largely due to the department directors and their management teams, each of whom were subject matter experts. Though only two of those original department directors remain with the City today, Jim Hossley the Public Works and Community Development Director; and City Attorney Nate McClintock, those who have been added to the team have resulted in truly a dream team of directors and middle managers. Rodger shared that he also had the great pleasure of working with three different mayors, seven different council presidents, and 30 different city councilors, and acknowledged that without doubt he had worked with the best city council in the state of Oregon.
While we are sad to be at the end of this chapter for Coos Bay and Rodger, we are very excited to see Rodger soar in his new role as the Executive Director at Coos County Airport District. We have no doubt he will lead that strong team towards achieving success just as he has done for the City of Coos Bay. The success and the growth of the Airport District impacts the success of the region, and Rodger is definitely the individual for the job.
It is also with gratitude that we wish Rodger well in his new role, as he helped pave the way for a succession plan two years ago, mentoring the incoming City Manager Nichole Rutherford in preparation for this very transition. We are equally as excited to begin our work with Nichole as she leads the City team forward.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

The Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD) would like to recognize Detective Wesley O’Connor for achieving five years of service at the CBPD. Detective O’Connor came to the CBPD after serving in the United States Marine Corps and as a police officer for the Department of Defense. During his time at CBPD, Detective O’Connor has been a patrol officer, defensive tactics instructor, field training officer, and most recently a detective. He has been instrumental, along with his co-instructor, at revamping the CBPD’s defensive tactics training into a Jiu Jitsu based training that aims at gaining compliance through control holds instead of pain compliance. Detective O’Connor possesses his Intermediate Certificate through the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training and has completed a total of 1,324.25 hours of training.
Please join me in congratulating Detective O’Connor on completing his five years of service!

“Memory Café Coos” will have monthly meetings starting Wednesday, August 2, from 10:30 to noon at the North Bend Public Library.
Memory cafés are social gatherings for older adults with memory issues and their care partners. Care partners may be spouses, siblings, children or friends, and their social lives are often just as affected as their loved ones. These gatherings are light and casual and allow care partners to relax and socialize with others in their same situation. There is no cost to attend.
The Café will be staffed by qualified healthcare providers (LCSW), library staff, and volunteers. Memory Café Coos will provide a safe, comfortable, supportive space where activities are not dependent on flawless memories and care partners can be with their loved one and still have social interactions. However, this is not a care facility, and care partners are required to accompany their partners.
This pilot project is funded by an Elder Service Innovation Grant from OHSU’s Office of Oregon Rural Health grant. The project is the work of Drea Douglas (North Bend Public Library), Kelli Bosak (North Bend Medical Center), and Lualhati Anderson (Oregon Older Adult Behavioral Health Initiative). They hope to find community partners who will host cafés as well, with a goal of having a weekly memory café in Coos and Curry Counties.
For more information about this program, contact the library at (541) 756-0400 or email nbservices@northbendlibrary.org.
