Earlier this week, the Council interviewed five citizens who applied to fill the vacated position on the City Council. This position was formerly held by Councilor Rob Miles before he and his wife moved to Springfield. The Council interviewed Troy Cribbins, Ryan Tuss, Roger Morgan, Michael Hicks, and Lee Ann Warner. I can’t begin to express how impressed I was with all the applicants. But at the end of the day, the Council could only choose one to fill the empty position. By a majority vote, the Council chose Troy Cribbins to be the next City Councilor. Councilor Cribbins’ took his place at the Council dais Tuesday night and term of office will continue until the next general election in November 2024.
Councilor Cribbins has lived in Coos Bay for over 16 years. This is where he and his wife raised a family and where he started a small business. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well as a practicing Physical Therapist. Currently, he is the Administrator of Pacific Home Health and Hospice and is also an elected member of the Bay Area Hospital Board of Directors.
I want to extend a heartfelt welcome to Councilor Cribbins and my thanks to all those who applied to serve.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

Tourism is big business in Oregon. According to Dean Runyan Associates, visitor spending in Oregon last year was $13.9 billion which supports over 117,000 jobs across Oregon. Cultivating this multibillion-dollar industry takes more than a little effort. In 1995 the Oregon Tourism Commission (OTC), doing business as Travel Oregon, was formed. Travel Oregon is a semi-independent agency which is governed by a nine-member governor-appointed board. In 2019, Lucinda DiNovo was appointed by former Oregon Governor Kate Brown to serve on the Oregon Tourism Commission. For the past year, she has served as Vice Chair of the organization and beginning July 1 she will assume the role as Chair.
Lucinda began her career in the gaming and hospitality industry almost 27 years ago, and currently serves as Director of Sales for The Mill Casino • Hotel and RV Park, owned by the Coquille Indian Tribe. She holds a degree in business management and marketing from Oregon State University.
In addition to serving on the Oregon Tourism Commission, Lucinda is the Council President on the Coos Bay City Council, and she serves as Chair of the Coos Bay-North Bend-Charleston Visitor and Convention Bureau Board. She also is a Past President of the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow and has served on numerous other boards, including the Oregon Restaurant and Lodging Association and Board of Trustees for the Coos History Museum.

Storm Line Repair and Construction
Earlier this spring, while repairing a sanitary sewer, a storm line failure was observed by the City’s Water Quality Collection Crew. The sanitary sewer repair consisted of replacing 50 feet of compromised pipe and repairing a sink hole in the road. There was a temporary repair made to the storm line, but due to high ground water and heavy storm flows the final repair had to be completed in the summer months. The Water Quality Collection Crew spent last week repairing the line, which included replacing pipe, installing a new catch basin, reconnecting two citizen connections, and patching the road. This restoration will help the drainage in this area and improves the City’s infrastructure.
The Water Quality Collection Crew has a few more projects lined up for this summer and already completed a several this spring as weather permitted. These small projects are essential to the City infrastructure and it is very helpful to have in-house staff to perform these repairs.

Officer Given Certificate of Commendation
Recently, the Coos Bay Police Department’s (CBPD) Community Resource Officer Theran Coleman was presented with a Certificate of Commendation from the American Legion Bay Area Post #34. The certificate was awarded for “Outstanding Public Service Benefiting Our Community, State and Nation.”
The CBPD would like to thank the American Legion for their recognition of Officer Coleman, their service to veterans, service members, and our community as well as their continued support and recognition for first responders.
A little bit about Officer Coleman
Officer Coleman has over 11 years of experience as a police officer. He is a highly motivated, hardworking individual who is dedicated to serving his department and community.
Officer Coleman is a team player and works well with community groups such as the Nancy Devereux Center and Coos Health and Wellness, specifically the Mobile Response Team. These partnerships and his caring for all of our citizens made him an excellent selection to serve as our Community Resource Officer (CRO).
Officer Coleman also serves the department as an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) instructor, to help train our officers in the safe operation of our patrol vehicles; a critical skill our officers need and use daily. Officer Coleman is also a Field Training Officer to help mold, train, and mentor our new officers.
