The beloved Coos Bay Downtown Association (CBDA) Coos Bay Farmers Market opened on Wednesday, May 3 with a fantastic kick off for the 22nd season. Visitors were treated to sunshine, fresh local food, and wares while listening to live music and a crowd of friendly people. The music will continue to play at the Farmers Market every Wednesday as our favorite neighbor and sponsor, So It Goes Coffeehouse, hosts Music at the Market.
Thanks to Ziply Fiber's sponsorship, “Farm Fresh to Every Fork” will continue to be a focus of the CBDA Food Accessibility program. The CBDA Food Accessibility program is to ensure our food poor community has access to farm fresh fruits, vegetables, and basic food items needed for a healthy well-balanced diet at no cost to them while educating them on the importance of healthy eating and stretching their food budget. The SNAP/EBT program with a $20 Double Up Food Buck (DUFB) match for fruits and veggies will be available the entire season. That means you put $20 on your SNAP/EBT card at the Market Informational booth, and you will receive $40 worth of tokens and vouchers to use at the Market. WIC and Senior Nutritional vouchers will be happily accepted at the CBDA Farmers Market.
Enjoy the music, entertainment, demonstrations, samples, yummy hot food, artistic treasures, children’s programs, Food Accessibility programs, and fresh grown produce. The Farmers Market runs every Wednesday through October from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. in downtown Coos Bay on Central Avenue.

City Parks Benefit from Arbor Day Event
By City Council Proclamation, the City of Coos Bay observes Arbor Day on the last Friday of April each year. City staff along with Tree Board Member Meredith Childs and volunteer Jim Tofflelmire planted a total of nine trees inside of three City parks. Three trees were planted at the Eastside Boat Launch Facility, three were planted at Pirates Park, and three were planted at John Topits Park. The three planted at John Topits Park were donated by Tofflemire to encourage stewardship of the natural health of our community.
Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska. Now, it is observed throughout the nation and the world. Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife. Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper and wood for our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products. Trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community. Coos Bay has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation and desires to continue its tree-planting endeavors.
Should you have questions, please feel free to contact Public Works and Community Development at (541) 269-8918.

Firefighter of the Year for 2019-2022
The Coos Bay Fire Department (CBFD) held its annual banquet last Saturday night at The Mill Casino. Due to the pandemic, this was the first awards banquet for the Department since 2019. Both department retirees and current staff were thankful for the opportunity to once again get together to reflect on the achievements and celebrate those individuals that have demonstrated outstanding service.
Chief Anderson shared some of the statistics from the past four years, highlighting the continuing increase in response activity. In 2022, the Department responded to 4,420 emergencies. This reflects a 4.5 percent increase over 2021 despite efforts to revise the Departments’ response model.
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of some outstanding individuals. Firefighter/Engineer Anthony Saccente was awarded the Firefighter of the Year award for 2019, Battalion Chief Steve Takis received the award for 2020. Firefighter/Engineer Jason Wilson and Battalion Chief John Guenther were presented with the Firefighter of the Year honors for 2021 and 2022 respectively. Others being recognized for outstanding service included Fire Marshal Amy Linder, Firefighter/Engineer Gabe Ouellette, and Volunteer Firefighter Scott LaFevre.
Some of the special guests in attendance included Cliff Vaniman (Fire Chief from 1991 – 1996), Chuck Leslie (Vol. Deputy Chief 1954 to 1982), and Ed Johnson (Volunteer for 52 years; 1959 to 2011). These dedicated men were joined by a dozen other retirees as well as the active members of the CBFD.

Following a comprehensive evaluation, Anthony Saccente was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
Saccente has been a Firefighter/Engineer for Coos Bay since May of 2018. He is a licensed Paramedic, a Hazardous Materials Technician, and has several fire service certifications that will benefit his development as a new officer. Saccente was selected as the CBFD Firefighter of the Year in 2019 and in 2022 he was recognized by the American Legion as the Firefighter of the Year for the State of Oregon.
Saccente and his wife, Haley, (a dispatcher for the City of Coos Bay) became new parents on January 1 of this year. The CBFD is excited to have this enthusiastic and respected young leader join the team of fire service officers.

The City of Coos Bay is participating in the annual Building Safety Month, a worldwide campaign presented by the International Code Council, its members, and partners to promote building safety. On Tuesday, May 2, Mayor Benetti proclaimed May as Building Safety Month. This year’s campaign, “Building Safety is….Personal,” raises awareness about the importance of building codes in ensuring safety in the spaces in which we live, work, and learn. The Council proclamation can be viewed by clicking the button below.
Regardless of whether you own your home or you're renting, keeping your home maintained is important to ensure you're living in a safe environment. Home maintenance encompasses a wide range of preventative tasks that all contribute to occupant health, occupant safety, security, and overall sustainability. From mold prevention to electricity safety tips from a code inspector, here are some of the resource highlights:
- Never overload electrical cords or power strips. Be sure the total amount of energy used by appliances and lights plugged into the cord or strip does not exceed that capacity.
- Don’t use appliances that have damaged cords.
- For mold prevention, watch for leaky pipes, condensation and wet spots, and fix sources of moisture problems as soon as possible.
- There are several materials and items that shouldn't be flushed down the toilet, including medication, disposable wipes, coffee grounds and more.
The International Code Council is helping our communities forge a path forward on energy and sustainability to confront the impacts of a changing climate and these guiding tenants can be used at home, too! With fresh water supplies at risk and an ever-increasing load on the power grid threatening communities around the world, every proactive step we take at home makes a big difference in decreasing our footprint and burden on the system. Keep these tips (more below) in mind the next time you set your thermostat, plan a home renovation and more.
- Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators, and use your water meter to check for hidden water leaks.
- Never dump anything down storm drains.
- Change the filters in the heating and cooling system of your home regularly.
- Replace your light bulbs with LEDs, which use up to 90 percent less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
- Design your home with materials that are easily recyclable, reusable, renewable, durable, affordable, and low maintenance.
- Build a rain garden to capture roof drainage and divert it to your garden or landscaping. Be sure to check your local rules on rainwater harvesting prior to installation.
