At the beginning of every year many make new year resolutions. According to a 2021 Forbes article, most New Year’s resolutions are about self-improvement (living healthier, becoming happier, losing weight, exercising more, and the list goes on). While many make these resolutions, its reported that less than 10% achieve them. It is easy to forget our good intentions. It is also hard to stay committed when we are juggling so much in our day to day lives. So why do we do it? I think we do it because we want more out of life; something better for us and those we care about.
Earlier this year, the City Council underwent a process to identify its two-year resolutions (Council Goals) to make necessary improvements, all in an effort to make something better for all those who live, work or visit our community. We identified the following nine overarching goal areas; each having goal related tasks or sub goals identified:
In an effort to achieve the Council’s goals, we are making it a priority to assess the progress made and identify next steps on a quarterly basis. While the ink is barely dry on the adopted 2023-2025 Council goals, we had our first quarterly review this week. We are making progress, which translates to improvements for our city. The report has been posted on the City’s website here, Council Goals Update 03252023.

On March 22, 2023, Officer Jordan Moeller, Officer Ryan Scoville, Officer. Wesley O’Connor, and Officer Tristan Smith completed the Coos Bay Police Department’s (CBPD) Watch Commander Academy (WCA). CBPD Watch Commanders are routinely asked to lead and supervise a patrol shift.
The Watch Commander Academy (WCA) is an immersive two-day (16-hour) course covering policy and procedures and their supervisory responsibilities in areas such as shift briefing, handling complaints, Karly’s Law and child abuse, office involved shootings, major crime response, pursuits, workplace injuries, use of force, and several more critical patrol operations.
In addition, the officers had classes on leadership and were able participate in several tabletop exercises to engage their critical thinking and use of resources.
The WCA curriculum was developed and instructed by CBPD Sergeants E. Schwenninger, D. Henthorn, G. Vrooman, and C. Rule. Also, a special thanks to Jessica Spencer from the City of Coos Bay, Human Resources, for her contribution.
Please join us in congratulating Officers Moeller, Scoville, O’Connor, and Smith on completing the CBPD Watch Commander Academy.

New Gate Installation at Boat Ramp
Recently, a new gate was installed at the entrance of the Eastside Boat Ramp. The gate will allow City staff to better regulate the Eastside Boat Ramp’s operational hours of 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. An artistic touch on the gate is a metal cutout that depicts a fisherman and his dog in a boat. The Eastside Boat Ramp is a popular gateway to the tremendous fishing in Coos Bay and Coos River.

The Energy Trust of Oregon is bringing energy savings to the Coos Bay community.
Currently, Energy Trust is offering a no-cost LED lighting upgrade opportunity for smaller businesses and commercial-type buildings, who are customers of Pacific Power. This includes inside and outdoor lights.
Buildings must be either less than 20,000 square feet OR have fewer than 20 employees.
Examples of qualifying types of businesses and non-profits buildings include stores and commercial businesses, restaurants, offices, service stations, motels, food banks, social and community services organizations’ buildings, churches/houses of worship or faith, clinics, and many others. Industrial facilities and common areas of multifamily/apartment property lighting may also qualify.
Energy Trust encourages participation from those organizations and buildings that have not been able to upgrade to LEDs and those that can most benefit from electric bill savings through these lighting upgrades.
