At this week’s City Council meeting, the Council had the privilege of recognizing and honoring the members of the Marshfield Volleyball Team and a member of the Marshfield Cross Country Team. The Council unanimously voted to approve two proclamations expressing our collective admiration for the students’ outstanding record of accomplishments this year.
The first proclamation was in recognition of the Marshfield Volleyball Team who capped an amazing season by winning the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA), Class 4A Championship. This is an historic first as this is the only volleyball state title in Marshfield High School’s history. The Lady Pirates had an impressive overall record of 25 wins and only three losses for their championship season.
The second proclamation was in recognition of Alex Garcia-Silver, a member of the Marshfield Cross Country Team. Alex has posted several impressive accomplishments recently to include shattering the course record in the high school division of the annual Prefontaine Memorial Run, winning the Jim Danner Championship Race at the Nike Portland Cross Country Meet, and earning his second state cross country title which tied Marshfield legend Steve Prefontaine who also earned two individual state cross country titles during his time at Marshfield.
On behalf of the Council, we want to honor our student athletes for their remarkable athletic accomplishments, perseverance, and resilience. We also honor all those who have supported these students including their coaches, parents, the faculty, and student body at Marshfield High School.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

Council Supports Zonta's Efforts to Stop Violence Against Women
At the Tuesday, December 6 Council meeting, Coos Bay City Council approved a proclamation supporting the efforts of the Zonta Club of the Coos Bay Area in their ten days of activism, ending on December 10, 2022, and proclaiming that date in Coos Bay as “Zonta Says No to Violence Against to Women” Day. Several members of the local club attended the meeting in support for the current Zonta Club President, Alissa Pruess, as she read the proclamation presented for City Council approval.
The proclamation provides disheartening statistics of the prevalence of gender-based violence across the globe and the international efforts of Zonta Clubs throughout 62 countries to achieve a world free of violence against women and girls. All residents are encouraged to join with Zonta in their efforts to prevent gender-based violence through individual and community education on the harm caused by this violence, to advocate for survivors of gender-based violence, and to act in service on the behalf of victims.
