Through a partnership with Washed Ashore, an organization dedicated to collecting and transforming ocean garbage into unique art sculptures which are put on display around the world, one of their art sculptures is now on display in the Preway in downtown Coos Bay.
The new partnership began after Washed Ashore opened a second processing and refurbishing facility in Coos Bay earlier this year. Washed Ashore uses their art sculptures to educate others about pollution in the ocean and to spread the message about keeping plastic garbage out of our waterways.
Washed Ashore has 80 plus art sculptures which are mostly used as traveling exhibits that are put on display around the globe. Through those traveling exhibits, Washed Ashore generates revenue, which is used and augmented with grants and donations to fund its ongoing work. We are fortunate that Washed Ashore has extended their operations into Coos Bay and I am thankful about their willingness to display one of their sculptures in our city at no cost.
For more information about Washed Ashore, their history, sculptures and how you can get involved, visit their website or contact them at (458) 710-1186.

Consistent with City Council’s goal to expand housing opportunities, work on a Housing Production Strategy (HPS) is underway. Completion of the HPS will establish additional programs and policies to ensure or incentivize production of needed housing by price point for rent and ownership. The HPS strategies will support the City of Coos Bay in facilitating new housing options.
By spring of 2023, the HPS will be completed and identify, among other information, a description of chosen housing strategies, a timeline for adoption, and when implementation of the strategies is expected to achieve needed housing. The report will include housing needs by income, number of units anticipated to be created, populations who would benefit from HPS implementation and how progress on new housing will be documented.
Watch for next week’s Friday Update on how you can participate in the HPS process. For more information, contact Community Development Consultant Carolyn Johnson at 541-252-2861 or cjohnson@coosbay.org.

He and his wife are native Oregonians who moved to the Coos Bay area in 2000 to fulfill their dream of living on the Oregon Coast. Two incredible events will take place this Saturday all for the benefit of kids right here in Coos County. It’s the largest Toy Drive in Oregon, the K-DOCK Rotary Bus Jam and Bykes for Tykes Toy Run!
This Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will collect at three sites in Coos County: Bi Mart in Coos Bay and North Bend and Bandon US Cellular! Bring a new unwrapped toy, nonperishable food or a cash donation during that time and our volunteers will get them ready for distribution day the following week.
At the same time, the annual Bykes for Tykes Toy Run will deliver more than 200 bicycles and loads and loads of toys on motorcycles. It’s a thunderous heartwarming site you do not want to miss. A tradition that has been making Christmas magical for multiple decades!
Both these events come together and bring a little joy to kids who might not otherwise get a bike or toy for Christmas. We thank our community for always coming through and we appreciate you beyond words. We will see you Saturday!
