The annual Blackberry Arts Festival has been a staple event in our community for decades. Well, at least it was before the COVID-19 pandemic which required the festival to be canceled, just like many other festivals and special events. The Blackberry Arts Festival is a juried art and craft festival that had been occurring consecutively for 37 years (pre-pandemic). It was started to highlight the works of local artists and crafters during the annual harvest of the blackberry. The two-year hiatus is over, and I am looking forward to the Blackberry Arts Festival this weekend!
The festival will once again feature an impressive array of metalwork, jewelry, quilts, candles, hand-painted clothing, wine, carved wood, and much more. All of which will be available for purchase. The festival also includes food vendors which makes it easy to find food and craft featuring blackberries. This is a free event with activities centered on Central Avenue in downtown Coos Bay.
Sometimes we don’t truly appreciate what we have until it’s gone for a while. We are more than blessed in our community to have all the special events, annual festivals, and cultural activities, which has become a part of the fabric of this community. My thanks to the Coos Bay Downtown Association and its many sponsors for bringing this event back.
-Joe Benetti, Coos Bay Mayor
