Restorations, Redevelopment, and New Development Along Front Street
It is exciting to watch as the Front Street area is rejuvenated! There is certainly a diversity of projects underway, starting with the restoration of the century old Coos Bay Iron Works building. Below you will find some historic pictures provided by the building’s new owner, Heidi Sause, who intends to restore the building and preserve the historic contents within it.
This week the building received a fresh coat of paint, and the historic lettering is being hand painted back on the front of the building.
Just down the block, the redevelopment of the former Marshfield Bargain House property is taking shape. Dani and Rick Stevens purchased the property and opened Real Deals last year in the front half of the building after remodeling it. Real Deals is a place to find amazing home décor. Lately, Rick has been busy implementing his plans to create an indoor / outdoor space for his new business, Front Street Food Trucks. The parking lot was recently paved to not only provide some parking, but space for up to eight food trucks as well as some outdoor seating.
The developers of Coos Bay Village continue to make progress. A couple of new buildings have been recently completed; others are in progress while another has been started.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

At the City Council’s meeting on August 2, 2022, the Council approved a ballot measure to be placed on the upcoming November 8, 2022, ballot in response to the recently passed state-wide ballot measure #109 (M109).
M109, also known as the Oregon Psilocybin Service Act, was passed by Oregon voters in November 2020 and has now been codified into Oregon Revised Statutes (ORS) chapter 475A. M109 requires the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) to begin accepting applications for licenses to manufacture, deliver and administer psilocybin on January 2, 2023. OHA is currently working through establishment of rules and procedures surrounding this new ORS chapter 475A, leaving city governing bodies without guidance. As such, City Council took one of two options available as noted within 475A, referral to the electors an option to either ban psilocybin-related businesses or placement of a two-year moratorium on psilocybin-related businesses, by adopting a resolution to refer a ban on psilocybin-related businesses within Coos Bay to the voters. Similar referrals are occurring in cities throughout the county and state which will appear on the November ballot.
Following Oregon Election Law regarding referrals, the following measure will be on the upcoming November 8, 2022, ballot:
Shall the City of Coos Bay prohibit all psilocybin-related businesses within the City?
Should you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the City Recorder/Elections Official at: 541-269-8912 or nrutherford@coosbay.org.

IN A LANDSCAPE:
Classical Music in the Wild™ at Shore Acres
August 23-25 at 6 p.m.
Photo courtesy of IN A LANDSCAPE. Photo by Ed Schmidt
Founded in 2016 by classical pianist Hunter Noack, IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild is an outdoor concert series where America’s most stunning landscapes replace the traditional concert hall. We bring a 9-foot Steinway grand piano on a flatbed trailer to National Parks, urban greenspaces, working ranches, farms, and historical sites for classical music concerts that connect people with each landscape.
To meet the acoustical challenges of performing in the wild, music is transmitted to concert-goers via wireless headphones. No longer confined to seats, you can explore the landscape, wander through the Shore Acres garden, lie in sunny meadows, and roam along the rugged cliffs.
IN A LANDSCAPE: Classical Music in the Wild™ concerts are brought to you in partnership with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Sponsors Wild Rivers Coast Alliance , Travel Southern Oregon Coast , and Oregon’s Adventure Coast: Coos Bay, North Bend, Charleston.
About this landscape…
There is always something blooming in the gardens at Shore Acres State Park!
Perched on craggy sandstone cliffs high above the ocean, Shore Acres State Park celebrates two sorts of beauty: ruggedly organic and masterfully constructed.
Once the grand estate of timber baron Louis J. Simpson, Shore Acres features a formal garden inspired by the original, with plants and flowers from all over the world. Visitors find a Japanese-style garden with a lily pond and two carefully curated rose gardens that include All-American Rose Selections.
Get here early to explore trails beyond the garden that lead to a secluded ocean cove at Simpson Beach.
