Help Improve Cancer Early Detection
Join the Pathfinder 2 Study to Find Cancer Early
If you’re in Oregon, you may have recently seen a Facebook post like this:
“If you could take a single blood test to check for many types of cancer, would you do it?”
Bay Area Hospital is partnering with the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) on a research study called Pathfinder 2, aimed to better understand whether a blood test can accurately find cancer in study participants. The test, called Galleri™, was developed by Grail, Inc., and is used to check for many kinds of cancers, including some for which there is currently no early screening tool.
In Coos Bay, the study is being led by Dr. Bret Cook, Medical Director of the Bay Area Cancer Center; Cherie Cox, Cancer Research Nurse; and Kathy Forrester, Clinical Research Coordinator for OHSU. So far, more than 50 people in the Bay area have signed up to get the multi-cancer early detection blood test. I have also signed up to be included myself.
If you are over the age of 50, and you have never had cancer or have been cancer-free for at least three years, you might be eligible to enroll. Participation is free. People over the age of 70 are especially needed for this study. At this time, enrollment focuses on certain groups that are currently underrepresented in the Pathfinder 2 study population, so they have halted recruitment of Caucasian individuals ages 50-59. Read about their diversity initiatives here.
If you are interested in enrolling or have questions, contact a Pathfinder 2 study team member at pathfinder@ohsu.edu, or call 503-418-8150. Learn more at: www.ohsu.edu/pathfinder-study.
As someone who has lost a dear loved one to cancer, another loved one battling cancer right now and as a cancer survivor myself, I implore those of you who are eligible, to consider enrolling in the study.
-Joe Benetti, Mayor of Coos Bay

After much public engagement, the Front Street Blueprint was adopted by the City Council on June 21, 2022. The Blueprint speaks to public access improvements for the City’s working waterfront and includes boardwalk, bay overlooks, wayfinding, public art, and other public improvements references.
Participation in a community survey regarding public desires for Front Street was outstanding and was a strong part of the discussion in the Blueprint decision making process.

Recreational Railroading
The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay has partnered with the Oregon Coast Railriders and the community to offer excursion rides on the southernmost portion of the Coos Bay Rail Line this summer. While the section of the line from Coos Bay to Coquille is not currently in service, the Port and its partners are excited to provide a recreational opportunity as we work to re-establish rail activity on that section of track. Trips will depart from Sturdivant Park in Coquille and run north for approximately eight miles to Coaledo Hill Road, returning to Sturdivant Park for a scenic 16-mile round trip experience.
The Railriders will begin operating on this section of line starting Saturday, July 2 and will run every day until the end of October. Carts can accommodate up to four people, and it is anticipated that each excursion will include at least six carts. There will be three to four excursions running per day. Reservations can be made online or on site, however, on site ticket purchases will be available on a first come first served basis.

The Real Cost of Illegal Fireworks
As we quickly approach the Fourth of July, the men and women of the Coos Bay Police and Fire Departments want to ensure everyone has a safe and happy holiday
Each year in the United States, we celebrate the Fourth of July with community parades, picnics, barbecues, and fireworks - the things of which happy memories are made. We certainly hope everyone finds a way to celebrate and enjoy our Nation’s independence. But sadly, Independence Day also includes tragic events and injuries resulting from illegal fireworks use and is both traumatizing and harmful to children, animals, and a growing number of war veterans who deserve our loyalty the most.
Completely aside from the danger (both legal and personal) of exploding illegal fireworks, there's a huge risk of fire and property damage. Legal fireworks may be purchased only from Oregon permitted fireworks retailers and stands. Oregon law forbids possession, use, or sale of fireworks that fly, explode, or travel more than six feet on the ground or 12 inches in the air. Bottle rockets, Roman candles, and firecrackers are ILLEGAL in Oregon.
