June 27 – July 1 has been designated as National Boys and Girls Club Week. Celebrated since 1941, National Boys and Girls Club Week recognizes the invaluable service these clubs bring to communities. There are thousands of Boys and Girls Clubs serving communities across America and we are fortunate to have one here! Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon has been serving the bay area for 40 years. It’s my sincere belief that the Boys and Girls Club makes our kids and our community a better place.
Below are some facts of our local Boys and Girls Club:
- 2,698 Registered Members in 2021
- 530 Other Coos County Youth Served
- 11,686 Meals Served in 2021
- 47% of Club Members come from Low Income Families
- 22% of all Members come from single parent households
- 595 Volunteers in 2021
In recognition of National Boys and Girls Club Week and considering the tremendous service of Boys and Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon, the Coos Bay City Council approved the proclamation below.

Fentanyl Overdoses Rising Locally
On the afternoon of June 20, 2022, the Coos Bay Police and Fire departments responded to three reports of drug overdoses, one of which was fatal. In all cases, we suspect the overdoses were the result of the powerful drug Fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. The frequency of drug overdoses seen by our departments as well as other local first responders has seemingly doubled.
Coos Bay Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Takis reported his department administered Naloxone (a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose) 29 times in 2021 but has already administered Naloxone 25 times during 2022.
