While it’s Raining Today, Fire Season is Just Around the Corner
PHOTO-Coos Bay Fire Department staff with a banner reminder about planning ahead for the upcoming fire season.
The Coos Forest Protective Association recently reminded the community that now is the time to start thinking about fire prevention. The rain events over the last month have helped keep the start of fire season from coming early, but fire season will be here soon. Every sunny and windy day brings us closer to the start of fire season. Once fire season is declared all debris burning will be prohibited. Large piles built with machinery will hold heat for long periods of time. If you have large piles waiting for significant wetting rains, the fall is the safest timeframe for burning them.
Any time you debris burn you are responsible for maintaining control of your burn. For burning restrictions inside the Coos Bay city limits, review the burning regulations on the Coos Bay Fire Department webpage or call the Fire Department at 541-269-1191. You can download a copy of the Fire Department’s Residential Burning Regulations for additional reference. More useful information on fire prevention can be found at www.coosfpa.net.

New Headworks Has Got the Grit
The last few months have been very exciting at the Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 1. The installation of the new headworks has been ongoing and is now finished and fully operational.
What is the headworks? The headworks is the first step that wastewater goes through at the wastewater treatment plant. These machines are very important to the rest of the treatment process at the plant. The machines remove inorganic material and help reduce wear on the remaining process equipment. Proper screening and debris removal is imperative to the entire wastewater system. Equipment in the headworks include pumps, bar screen, screening compactor, grit removal systems, and a grit washing system.

Over the last few months you have been reading and learning about the history and innerworkings of Wastewater Treatment Plant No. 1. The last large upgrade to the plant occurred in 1990. While smaller updates have occurred in the last 20+ years, the plant is due for a large upgrade. There are many steps that have to be taken prior to actually updating a whole facility. These steps include but are not limited to: facility planning, evaluating funding abilities, value engineering, pre-design, final design, along with DEQ review and approvals. Once all these steps are complete construction can occur.
While this might seem like a long process it is a very important process to ensure that the steps are taken so the upgrade is the best for the plant and adheres to the constantly changing regulatory requirements. In the coming weeks there will be information on the steps this upgrade has taken and future steps to complete prior to the upgrade.

Front Street Blueprint Presentations
Over time the Front Street area has undergone private and public improvements from Ivy Street to the area just past Market Avenue adjacent to the Boardwalk. These improvements reflect a vibrant waterfront community vision developed by the Coos Bay community. Culmination of this vision has been captured in the Front Street Blueprint which was developed over this past year with engagement of community, businesses, property owners, the Front Street Advisory Committee, and the Planning Commission.
