The CCB requires a written contract for any project that costs more than $2,000, although many contractors will offer contracts for jobs below $2,000. Look the contract over carefully to ensure it includes the following:

  • Start and finish date.
  • Payment information, including total price, information about the down payment and installation payments.
  • A description of the project and detailed scope of work.
  • Information about change orders (how they will be made, costs, etc).
  • Warranties and guarantees. (Contractors are required to offer warranties on new homes!)
  • Conditions.
  • A line for signatures.

If there are parts of the contract that you don’t understand, have an attorney look it over before signing. For more information about hiring a contractor, take a look at our Consumer Guide to Selecting and Working with a Contractor.
