State Airports Support Wildfire Response
Oregon’s state airports play an important role in wildfire response by providing access for firefighting aircraft, personnel and equipment. During active fires, airports may be used as temporary bases or staging areas for aerial firefighting operations, allowing aircraft and crews to operate closer to where they are needed.
 This increased activity can include firefighting aircraft arriving and departing, aircraft staging on the ground and the movement of firefighting personnel and support equipment. In some cases, the level of activity requires portions of an airport to close or an airport to temporarily close to general aviation traffic to maintain a safe operating environment. Currently, Chiloquin and Toketee state airports are closed due to firefighting activity, while McKenzie Bridge State Airport remains open while supporting firefighting operations. At Joseph State Airport, firefighting-related taxiway restrictions have ended and the airport has returned to normal operations.
Oakridge State Airport (5S0) Runway Rehabilitation Project Completed!

The Oakridge State Airport has reopened following completion of the runway rehabilitation project. In just 65 days the runway and apron were completely reconstructed, and a second taxiway connector was added. The midfield and runway 9 end turn arounds were improved, and 4 concrete hard stands were added to better serve heavy firefighting aircraft. A new windsock and segmented circle were added, as well as supplemental windsocks on both runway ends to improve wind indication at this mountain airport. New tiedowns and airfield reflectors complete the improvements.
(!!) Please help ensure safety and maintain the airport by remaining off of the runway and taxiways except for authorized aeronautical uses. Pedestrians and vehicles are not allowed on the runway, taxiways, and the safety areas surrounding these surfaces. Any disturbance to the freshly graded shoulders will compromise the erosion protection.

State Airport Tenant Reminder
ODAV has several lessees that have not sent in current certificates of insurance, or shared updated contact information so we may get in touch with them. We encourage tenants at state airports to review their lease agreement to make sure they’re familiar with and following the terms of the agreement. Please be sure to send in your current certificate of insurance and latest contact information if that has changed recently. We thank you for your assistance
Korean Delegation Visit

We were excited to welcome a delegation of South Korean aviation leaders to Oregon July 26–30 for a week of conversations, tours and connections focused on the future of aviation.
The group traveled across Oregon to see what our growing UAS ecosystem has to offer. From Portland and Scappoose to Pendleton, Hermiston, Hood River and Tillamook, the delegation got a firsthand look at the people, places and capabilities that make Oregon a great place to test, develop and grow aviation technologies.
A huge thank you to all of the Oregon partners who helped make the visit happen and shared their work, including Business Oregon, Oregon Tech & OMIC, Oregon UAS Accelerator, Pendleton UAS Test Range, Port of Tillamook Bay, AUVSI Cascades, Overwatch Imaging and many more.
It was a great opportunity to make new connections, share what Oregon has to offer and explore what’s possible when we work together. We’re excited to see where these new connections take us!

Critical Oregon Airport Relief (COAR) Grant Cycle Announcement
The Oregon Department of Aviation (ODAV) is pleased to announce the opening of the Critical Oregon Airport Relief (COAR) Grant Cycle 11 (2026-2027) application process from October 12, 2026, through October 30, 2026. Since 2016, COAR has provided over 300 grants totaling more than $23 million to public use airports in Oregon for projects that continue to provide resiliency, increase safety and efficiency, and provide economic benefits to Oregon’s statewide aviation system.
COAR Program Coordinators will hold a Q&A Session virtually by TEAMS on October 13, 2026. This session is to provide a time for COAR applicants or other interested parties to ask questions regarding the COAR grant application or COAR grant administration. Further information including a link to the session will be posted on the ODAV website.
The Oregon Airport Manager’s Association (OAMA) conference is being held October 7-9, 2026, in Pendleton, Oregon. ODAV staff will be available to answer questions about the COAR program as needed.

ODAV’s airport operations staff are in full swing with summer maintenance at Oregon’s 28 state airports. Staff are continuing to mow, clean up vegetation and complete painting projects. Volunteers with the 99s helped paint the “Prospect” script at Prospect State Airport and the Idaho Aviation Association pitched in by painting the tie-downs at Owyhee State Airport. We appreciate both organizations for volunteering their time and helping keep our state airports well maintained.
This year’s dry conditions have allowed staff to get an early start on mowing, though limited equipment has made the schedule take a little longer. Staff are also working to keep airfield markings fresh. In the past three and a half years, every state airport has been painted, putting us on a three- to four-year cycle to maintain markings and improve the overall level of service.
With staff moving between all 28 airports, pilots should check NOTAMs and be aware of work in progress before flying. Staff may be mowing at one airport one day and working at another the next, so please use caution around maintenance activities and help us keep our staff and airport communities safe.
