The TSET Board of Directors passed three resolutions at a special meeting this month, tackling cigarette taxes, nicotine regulation and food access across Oklahoma.
Resolution in Support of an Increase in the State Cigarette Tax: calls on the state legislature to pass a meaningful increase to the tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products to decrease consumption.
Resolution on the Dangers of New and Emerging Nicotine Products: urges the state legislature to include new and emerging nicotine products within the state’s definition of tobacco products. Such legislation will enable Oklahoma officials to tax and track these items the same as other tobacco products and improve enforcement against underage sales.
Resolution in Support of Improving Access to Affordable Healthy Foods: calls on the state to support sustainable agriculture, facilitate zoning laws to encourage community gardens, farmers markets and farms, fund state and local food access programs like food banks and school gardens.

TSET Built Environment Grants and TSET Discovery Grants will open this November. These grants fund community-driven health projects that make a lasting impact across Oklahoma.
NewView Oklahoma received a $495,000 Discovery grant for a comprehensive wellness initiative for blind and low-vision resident, including an outdoor wellness space.
Requests for Applications (RFAs) for both opportunities will be posted on the TSET website on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Applications will be accepted through Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.

TSET Built Environment grants support projects to improve the health of Oklahomans by transforming community spaces and physical infrastructure.
Proposals must be project-driven, time-limited and benefit a specific area or population. Projects should have support from multiple partners and applicants must agree to participate in an external evaluation.

Discovery Grants support innovative and effective programs to improve the health of Oklahomans through one or more of the following focus areas:
- Tobacco prevention or cessation for high-risk groups
- Programs designed to maintain or improve the health of Oklahomans
- Enhanced provision of health care services, particularly for children and youth
- Enhancing the health and well-being of senior adults
Both grant opportunities are available to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, public entities such as municipalities and counties, tribal nations and educational institutions.

Perspective: Julie Bisbee in the Journal Record
As Oklahoma gears up to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Route 66, we reflect on how this iconic highway has shaped our state economy, interstate commerce and even the health of Oklahomans.
Beyond its reputation for scenic trips, Route 66 also paved the way for physical activities that promote health and well-being. Learn more about the history of health along Route 66 in this month's Journal Record column.

Lung cancer screenings save lives by detecting cancer early, but only 1.7 percent of eligible Oklahomans get screened. TSET and OU Health are teaming up to bring screening to more people by launching a Mobile Lung Cancer Screening bus this year.
Episode 48 of the TSET Better Health Podcast, available September 30, provides insights on lung cancer screenings from Dr. J. Matthew Reinersman, thoracic surgeon and director of the OU Health Lung Cancer Screening Clinic, and Terry Rousey, TSET associate director of statewide initiatives, on TSET's involvement in the program.
The TSET Better Health Podcast is available on TSET's website and everywhere podcasts are listened to: Spotify, TuneIn, Stitcher, PodBean, Google Podcasts and Apple Podcasts.
