FY2020 was an eventful year at TSET, with the launch of several new initiatives aimed at fulfilling our constitutional mandate to support programs that improve the health of Oklahomans.
The second round of five-year TSET Healthy Living Program grants were awarded to 35 organizations serving 37 counties. The TSET Board of Directors invested $1 million in Food Systems Impact Grants to reduce food insecurity and prevent hunger during the pandemic. TSET also launched the Healthy Youth Initiative aimed at helping teens prevent tobacco use and obesity.
The Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline achieved a 95% satisfaction rate with 28,547 registered users. TSET also hosted the Southern Obesity Summit in Oklahoma City, bringing hundreds of people here to learn best practices for encouraging healthy habits and preventing obesity in their communities.

FROM THE JOURNAL RECORD:
On Feb. 12, TSET welcomed Laura Matlock as a new program officer working with the organization’s Healthy Incentive Grants.
Matlock earned a master’s degree in public health from the University of Oklahoma. She brings more than ten years of public health experience to TSET. Laura worked in several wellness positions at the Oklahoma State Department of Health. She served as a community coordinator on the TSET Healthy Living Program grant in McClain County and previously as a quit coach for the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline. In addition to her public health roles, Matlock worked as an instructor at the University of Central Oklahoma and served as a lifestyle wellness coach.
“I have worked on several different initiatives alongside TSET’s staff during my career,” said Matlock. “TSET uses many innovative and evidence-based approaches to improve the health of Oklahomans and I’m thankful to be part of that work.”
Matlock fills a position that opened following the February retirement of Sharon Howard, who managed the Healthy Incentive Grants for Schools program.

Last spring, the coronavirus pandemic disrupted lives in Oklahoma and across the world. In response to increased hunger and food insecurity in Oklahoma, the TSET Board of Directors approved a $1 million investment in Food Systems Impact Grants.
Funding was awarded to seven grantees with innovative proposals to increase access to nutritious food in Oklahoma.
“It’s more than just a meal, it’s a lifeline into their needs. In terms of change, the funding from TSET is immeasurable,” said Christy Baker, executive director of RSVP Enid, one of the grantees.

Oklahoma classrooms have an important role to play in improving health outcomes in our state. Health education helps young people develop healthy habits that will stick with them for a lifetime, improving their quality of life and decreasing future health care costs and rates of chronic disease. And, studies even show that quality health education and physical activity improve academic performance in other subjects.
