REAL ID Deadline Drives More Press Coverage With just a little over two months left until the federal REAL ID deadline, The Oklahoman published an article this week that answers some frequently asked questions about the credential.
As of Jan. 1, the state had issued more than 2 million REAL IDs, with just under 1.4 million of them being active. This means about 41% of all active credentials (about 3.4 million) in Oklahoma are REAL IDs.
To help drive the REAL ID compliance rate up, The Oklahoman's article explains to readers that starting May 7, the credential will be needed to board domestic flights, visit military bases or certain federal buildings, unless the traveler has an unexpired U.S. passport or another acceptable form of ID.
Should travelers not have their REAL IDs by May 7, the article mentions that federal agencies have the option to enforce the law in phases for the first two years to facilitate a smoother transition to full enforcement. This means travelers who are not REAL ID compliant could get warning notices before being barred from access entirely.
However, we still recommend that Oklahomans get their REAL IDs by May 7 to avoid interruptions to their travel plans. We have a webpage, service.ok.gov/REALID, that explains how to apply for the credential at any of the 270 SOK and licensed operator locations across the state.
Oklahoma City Police on the Lookout for Expired Tags Oklahoma City Police and KOCO-TV are reminding drivers about the new vehicle pre-registration process under Senate Bill 2035.
The Police Department posted on its Facebook page that starting tomorrow, they will begin March Tag Madness, a campaign in which Oklahoma City officers will be on the lookout for vehicles with expired tags. In the post, the Police Department urged Oklahomans to visit our webpage, ReadySetTag.com, to ensure they understand the new pre-registration process so they can get their metal plates on time.
KOCO-TV then covered March Tag Madness in this morning's newscast, reminding viewers that vehicles must be pre-registered with the state within two days of purchase.
