Thanks to dealers across Oklahoma, more than 114,000 vehicles have been pre-registered with the state under Senate Bill 2035. As we look forward to building that momentum in the new year, we're offering some quick reminders to simplify your workflow.
Transfer License Plates When Possible During a vehicle sale, ask your customer if they have an existing metal license plate they wish to transfer. Standard state of Oklahoma plates, specialty plates and tribal plates from Chickasaw and Choctaw nations can all be transferred.
Plate Transfers Not Limited to Trade-Ins Customers do not need to trade in their vehicles to transfer their metal license plates. In Oklahoma, license plates are assigned to people, not vehicles. This means a customer can keep their old car (to sell, donate, etc.) and transfer its plate to their newly purchased vehicle.
Transferring Plates Saves Resources Every effort should be made to confirm if a customer has an existing metal plate to transfer. Issuing a temporary paper tag only when it's necessary will save you time and money while reducing waste.
Next Steps When transferring a customer's plate, you should ensure the plate is affixed to the newly purchased vehicle. While you're submitting pre-registration information through OkCARS or file transfer, enter "P" in the "Plate Type" field to indicate a plate transfer. Inform your customer that they will receive two pre-registration decals by mail, which they must affix to their plate within 10 days of the purchase date.
If a customer does not have a plate to transfer, issue them a temporary paper tag. Please ensure that the date on the paper tag is the date that the tag expires: 10 days from the date of sale. During pre-registration, enter "T" in the "Plate Type" field to indicate a temporary plate. Inform your customer that they will be mailed a new metal plate with two pre-registration decals already attached. They must affix the metal plate to their vehicle within 10 days of the purchase date.
In either case, let the customer know that they have two months from the date of purchase to fully register their vehicle at a licensed operator location. As a convenient reminder of these steps, we created cards that you can print out and give to your customers.
