With Senate Bill 1766 taking effect on Nov. 1 of this year, please find information below about the changes that will affect commercial driver education schools. In addition, we are sharing details about training for instructors to become designated examiners.
SB1766 Changes
- There will be an option for schools and instructors to apply for a one-year or four-year certification. Electronic signatures will also now be accepted on applications submitted to Service Oklahoma. Here are the links to the applications for certification:
- Schools will be allowed to conduct driver education instruction for drivers ages 13-and-a-half to under 15 years old who qualify for a Farm Permit. To determine eligibility, the student will need to submit a copy of their parent or employer Farm Permit affidavit to the school prior to enrollment. Copies will need to be kept with the student instruction record.
2025 Designated Examiner Training Opportunities
All certified driver education instructors who are employed by a school district or a certified commercial driver training school may apply to become a designated examiner, who is authorized to administer a drive test to anyone who possesses a valid Oklahoma Learner Permit.
This training will consist of the same curriculum that Service Oklahoma examiners receive. The program is comprised of three parts: online training, classroom training and in-car training.
We are excited to announce the following classroom training dates for 2025.
- Feb. 12 and 13
- April 16 and 17
- June 17 and 18
- Aug. 13 and 14
- Oct. 15 and 16
To enroll in the classroom training session, click here, enter your information and upload your completed designated examiner application and all other documents required by the application. If you are a current certified driver education instructor, you will submit the designated examiner application along with a copy of your driver education instructor permit/certificate. Applicants may select their preferred training dates and every effort will be made to enroll you in your first selection.
Classroom trainings will take place at the Service Oklahoma headquarters, located at 6015 N. Classen Blvd. in Oklahoma City. Instructors will train from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days of each session.
Once you have been selected for a classroom training session, you will be sent the online training portion. This online training must be completed prior to your first day of class. The earlier you sign up for classroom training, the more time you will have to complete your online coursework.
Lastly, in-car training is required for each applicant. The time required will be determined on an individual basis. Certification is proficiency based and Service Oklahoma will only grant certification once an instructor completes all three components of the training. Please note the certification must be completed within 12 months of the classroom training date.
A fingerprint-based criminal history background check will be required to be submitted by each selected applicant. Applicants are also required to submit a $1,000 training fee prior to the first day of classroom training. The training fee will be waived for public school instructors if they are only conducting tests for students in public school driver education programs. Further information on these requirements will be provided to each applicant upon selection.
If you would like to learn more before applying for the training, you may review the Oklahoma Administrative Code governing designated examiners: Title 670. Service Oklahoma; Chapter 15. Driver Licenses and Identification Cards; Subchapter 17. Certified Schools and Designated Class D Examiners.
If you have any questions about the training process or need assistance with the application, please reach out to Designated Examiner Manager Roxann Donatini at roxann.donatini@service.ok.gov or (405) 397-3291.
