Attention REAC3H Coordinating Districts! The Spring REAC3H Summit will be Tuesday, March 26th at the Embassy Suites in Norman. The focus of the Summit is Meeting the Challenges of the Oklahoma C3 Standards including Common Core. We are extremely excited to announce that our keynote speaker will be Professor Timothy Shanahan.

Professor Shanahan is a Distinguished Professor of Urban Education at the University of Illinois at Chi­cago where he is Di­rector of the UIC Center for Literacy and chair of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction. Professor Shanahan will speak on the challenges of the Common Core State Standards. This presentation will explore the implications of shifts in educational practice, particularly in regard to English language arts curriculum and instruction, in addition to more challenging text, close reading, disciplinary literacy, informational text, and writing about reading in literature, math, social studies, and science.


The following breakout sessions will be available and will focus on the instructional strategies needed to implement the Oklahoma C3 Standards, including Common Core, successfully:

  • PreK-5 Math
  • PreK-5 ELA
  • PreK-12 Social Studies
  • PreK-12 Science
  • 6-12 Math
  • 6-12 ELA

Each REAC3H Coordinating District will have 6 seats available. We strongly encourage you to bring at least 1 ELA teacher, 1 math teacher, 1 science teacher, and 1 social studies teacher, as the focus will be on learning Oklahoma C3 Standards, including Common Core, instructional strategies.

More about Professor Shanahan: Previously, he was director of reading for the Chicago Public Schools, serving 437,000 children. He is author or editor of more than 200 publications including the books, Teaching with the Common Core Standards for the English Language Arts, Early Childhood Literacy, Developing Literacy in Second-Language Learners, and Improving Reading Comprehension in Kindergarten through Third Grade. Professor Shanahan is past president of the International Reading Association. He received a presidential appointment to serve on the Advisory Board of the National Institute for Literacy, and he took a leadership role on the National Reading Panel (NRP), convened by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) at the request of Congress to evaluate research on successful methods for teaching reading. He chaired two other federal research review panels, the National Literacy Panel for Language Minority Children and Youth and the National Early Literacy Panel, and was a member of the English Language Arts Work Team for the Common Core State Standards. He is co-principal investigator of the National Title I Study of Implementation and Outcomes: Early Childhood Language Development funded by the Institute of Education Sciences.
