The Mathematics Actions and Processes

MAP

The Mathematical Actions and Processes (MAPs) highlight the interconnected nature of math, focusing on patterns, relationships, and how math applies to everyday life and careers. The seven MAPs, aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Process Standards and the Five Mathematical Proficiencies, help Oklahoma students develop mathematical literacy. The gradient blocks at the top of the standards serve as a reminder for educators to integrate MAPs alongside content standards.

Throughout their PK-12 educational experience, mathematically literate students will:

1.  Develop a deep and flexible conceptual understanding.
2.  Develop accurate and appropriate procedural fluency.
3.  Develop strategies for problem solving.
4.  Develop mathematical reasoning.
5.  Develop a productive mathematical disposition.
6.  Develop the ability to make conjectures, model, and generalize.
7.  Develop the ability to communicate mathematically.

Learn more about each of the Mathematical Actions and Processes by visiting page 8 of the Oklahoma Academic Standards - Mathematics.

Artificial Intelligence Webinar Series

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is offering a series of training sessions on Artificial Intelligence (AI) during the spring semester. These virtual sessions are designed to help educators understand how to effectively integrate AI into their teaching practices and classroom activities. Each event focuses on practical strategies and tools that can enhance learning experiences. Each session will run from 6:00-7:00 PM. To participate, you can register for individual sessions using the links provided below.

Instructional Strategy: The 3-Read Strategy for Mathematics

The 3-Read Strategy is a comprehension strategy that can be incredibly effective in helping students understand math word problems. It breaks down the process of interpreting word problems by encouraging students to read the problem multiple times, with a different focus each time. This helps them engage with the problem more deeply and increases their chances of solving it accurately. Here's how it works:

1.  First Read: Understand the Problem

  • In this first reading, the goal is simply to understand the situation described in the problem. Students focus on what is happening in the problem and who or what is involved. The idea is to get a general sense of the story or scenario without worrying about the details.

2.  Second Read: Identify Key Information and Operations

  • During the second read, students focus on identifying the key numbers, operations, and relationships in the problem. This is when they underline or highlight important data and start to figure out what math needs to be done to solve the problem.

3.  Third Read: Solve the Problem

  • The third reading is when students focus on solving the problem. By this point, they have a solid understanding of the situation, the important information, and the operations needed. Now, they carry out the math to find the solution.

This instructional strategy helps break down complexity, promote active reading, clarify key information, and improve problem-solving skills for students.
