CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM

Chronic absenteeism and truancy both refer to patterns of missing school, but they differ in scope and implications. Chronic absenteeism is a broader term encompassing any student who misses a significant amount of school, typically defined as 10% or more of the school year, whether the absences are excused or unexcused. This can result from various factors, including health issues, family responsibilities, or school-related problems. Truancy, on the other hand, specifically refers to unexcused absences where students skip school without a valid reason or parental consent. While truancy often involves deliberate skipping, chronic absenteeism can include a range of issues leading to frequent absences, whether or not they are officially sanctioned. Both can adversely affect a student's academic performance and overall well-being, but addressing them requires different approaches tailored to the underlying causes.
