September 2024 Newsletter
In This Issue:
The 2024-2025 school year is underway, and districts across the state are embracing the opportunity to provide students with high-quality computer science education. As outlined in legislation:
-
For high schools: “Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all public high schools and public charter high schools in this state shall offer a minimum of one computer science course to students” (70 O.S. § 11-103.6m).
-
For middle and elementary schools: “Beginning in the 2024-2025 school year, all public middle and elementary schools and public charter middle and elementary schools in this state shall offer instruction aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science” (70 O.S. § 11-103.6m).
While rewarding, implementing a sustainable computer science program can be challenging. The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) has several resources to assist districts and educators in this process:
-
FAQ Document: This resource contains answers to common questions about the legislation and computer science implementation.
-
Computer Science Implementation Rubric: This valuable guide provides districts with recommendations for implementing computer science education. Using this rubric, districts can self-assess their CS programs, categorizing them as bronze, silver, or gold, and then create a plan for growth.
As the Project Manager of Computer Science Education, I am available to support districts in this endeavor. You can schedule a virtual one-on-one meeting with me here. For more comprehensive support, I am also available to host computer science implementation workshops for district leaders. To schedule a workshop, please email me at Jeremy.Maker@sde.ok.gov.
Let’s work together to strengthen computer science education across Oklahoma!

Oklahoma State Department of Education is excited to announce the release of Phase 1 of the Oklahoma Computer Science Framework, developed in collaboration with Oklahoma educators to support the implementation of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science (OAS-CS). This framework provides essential tools and resources designed to help you deliver high-quality computer science education to our students.
Phase 1 includes comprehensive analyses for each OAS-CS standard, featuring:
-
Standard in a Nutshell: A brief summary of each standard's objectives.
-
Student Actions: Clear descriptions of what students should be doing to demonstrate their understanding.
-
Teacher Actions: Practical guidelines to support your teaching and student achievement.
-
Key Concepts: Core ideas that are central to each standard.
-
Misconceptions: Common misunderstandings and strategies to address them.
This framework is part of our ongoing commitment to providing educators with the best possible resources. It will be regularly updated and improved based on your feedback and the needs of the educational community.

Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is excited to announce free professional development workshops for the 2024-25 school year. These workshops will be held in different regions to support educators with effective instructional strategies aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards. Space is limited, so register today!
Elementary - STEM and Computer Science
There are two parts to this professional development opportunity. The first part explores engaging and interactive resources for integrating STEM into the classroom using center-based activities. The second part explores how the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science (OAS-CS) can be leveraged to support other subject areas.
Middle School/High School Computer Science
This session explores meaningful computer science education at middle and high school levels. Participants will discover the relationship between the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science (OAS-CS) and classroom activities.
