Spotlight Story

Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) Logo

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is excited to announce that it has received a $2.8 million grant from the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET). The grant is funding a  3-year statewide project to support high-quality instruction for physical education. It will also support the development of coursework for a physical education micro-credential, instructional resources, and competitive grants designed to assist educators in best practices aligned with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Physical Education.

This grant aligns with TSET's mission to improve the health and quality of life for all Oklahomans. TSET focuses on high-impact priorities to reduce the leading causes of death in Oklahoma, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. “TSET is dedicated to fostering healthier communities by supporting initiatives directly impacting the well-being of Oklahomans,” said Julie Bisbee, TSET executive director. “This grant awarded to the Oklahoma State Department of Education is a significant step toward ensuring our children receive high-quality physical education. It  promotes lifelong healthy habits and provides educators with the tools they need to effectively teach and inspire the next generation.”

  • Participate in four on-site or virtual mentoring/coaching sessions,
  • Participate in a minimum of 15 hours of virtual professional development on various topics (e.g., classroom management, instructional resources, assessment, adapted physical education, recess before lunch),

New Online Training Available: Recess Before Lunch

Recess Before Lunch

The OSDE has released a new online training, Recess Before Lunch (RBL). This course was created to support the Oklahoma State Department of Health's State Obesity Plan and help educators implement the RBL program. This innovative approach to school scheduling flips the traditional sequence of lunch and recess, placing recess before lunchtime. This simple adjustment can have significant benefits for students' health, well-being, and academic performance.

For direct access to the RBL training, click here. You will be prompted to create an account in OSDE Connect before you start the course.

School-Based Medicaid Survey

Medicaid

The Oklahoma State Department of Oklahoma (OSDE) and the Oklahoma Health Care Authority (OHCA) are conducting needs assessment surveys to gather feedback about school-based Medicaid services from medical providers, school districts, parents/ guardians, schools, and community members. The goal is to understand school-based Medicaid services current landscape, challenges, awareness levels, and impact on student health and well-being. This data will help identify areas for improvement and ensure the program meets everyone's needs.

By participating in these surveys, you provide crucial insights that will guide enhancements to the School-based Medicaid program. Your feedback is essential in refining the program to better support student health services, streamline administrative processes, and strengthen community engagement. OSDE and OHCA value the feedback and are committed to using this information to drive positive change.

School-based Medicaid Survey

A school-based Medicaid reimbursement program enables schools to receive federal funds for health services provided to eligible students. This program covers services like health screenings, mental health counseling, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy within schools, aiming to improve students' health and academic performance.

Email Kellie Carter, Program Manager for School Health at the Oklahoma State Department of Education for questions, comments, or concerns.

* School-based Medicaid Services are currently pursuant to an Individual Education Plan (IEP) in the state of Oklahoma.*

**School-based Medicaid services do not limit access to health services in the community; instead, they complement community health resources by providing additional care and support to eligible students directly within the school environment. This ensures that children can receive necessary medical attention without having to leave school, enhancing overall access to healthcare.**

This survey is supported by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of a financial assistance award totaling 2.5 million dollars with 100 percent funded by CMS/HHS. The contents are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily represent the official views of, nor an endorsement, by CMS/HHS, or the U.S. Government.
