The Oklahoma State Department of Education has partnered with early childhood administrators and the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southwest to form the Leading Early Childhood Achievement and Development (LEAD) project. REL Southwest is collaborating with these partners to codevelop, test, and refine professional learning materials to build school leaders’ and pre-k and kindergarten teachers' knowledge of research-informed teaching practices.
The LEAD intervention aims to increase the use of research-based practices, including play-based learning and high-quality interactions, thereby increasing the quality of learning experiences and student outcomes in Oklahoma public schools. Through the LEAD professional learning series, school leaders will learn about the research and evidence-based practices that support play-based learning and high-quality teacher-student interactions in pre-k and kindergarten classrooms and acquire skills to support teachers to implement instructional practices that support play-based learning and high-quality interactions. Training includes in-person meetings, asynchronous learning modules, and virtual PLCs.
The goals of the LEAD professional learning series are to:

Increase school leader and teacher knowledge of research-based early learning practices, including play-based learning and high-quality interactions.

Support school leaders’ adoption and implementation of schoolwide policies to encourage teachers’ use of research-based early learning practices.

Improve teacher implementation of research-based early learning practices in their classrooms to increase student academic performance in literacy and decrease student suspensions and expulsions due to behavior issues.
