Teacher Appreciation

Thank you to all the math teachers for the hard work you have done this school year for our Oklahoma students. You have helped with fluency, building conceptual understanding, developed mathematical dispositions, and built relationships along the way. Now at the end of the school year, I would like to say a job well done. Take pride in your students heading out into the world as better mathematicians. I hope you will take time for self care and recharge in this summer!

Imagine Learning Celebration

yukon3

Congratulations to Yukon Public Schools on being recognized as the Top Imagine Math Think Point donor in the state. On March 29, Imagine Learning celebrated with Independence Intermediate School, commending their efforts and generosity in donating the most Imagine Math Think Points to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We were delighted to celebrate this achievement and positive impact that was made to fight against juvenile diabetes. Additionally, Imagine Learning extended their gratitude with an additional $500.00 donation on behalf of Yukon Public Schools to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, along with recognition of top donor students and class who played a significant role in this achievement! Thank you, Yukon, for your outstanding contributions and for embodying the spirit of giving!

OCTM Conference

OCTM

This year the Oklahoma Council of Teachers of Mathematics (OCTM) Annual Conference theme is "Wonder & Joy." After a few years of trying to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic, and all of the challenges it has left behind, OCTM is  urging teachers to once again find the joy of mathematics, and allow students to wonder about and explore the mathematics that surrounds them. On June 21, Annie Fetter, creator of the "Notice & Wonder" routines in the McGraw Hill Reveal Math curriculum, will be giving the keynote. There will be engaging workshops led by passionate math teachers from all grade levels, as well as poster sessions exhibiting lessons and activities other teachers are using in their classroom to spark joy and wonder in themselves and their students. Lunch will be provided and OCTM would be more than happy to have you there! You can find more information and register on our website.

Artificial Intelligence in OK Schools

AI

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is proud to announce the release of comprehensive guidance aimed at facilitating the responsible and effective use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 schools across the state.

In today's rapidly evolving educational landscape, the integration of AI technology has become increasingly inevitable. To support districts and educators in navigating this transformative shift, the Oklahoma State Department of Education has developed a pioneering set of recommendations and considerations.

Furthermore, the guidance emphasizes the importance of maintaining a human-centered approach to AI implementation, ensuring that educators remain at the forefront of decision-making processes.

The release of this guidance marks a significant milestone in Oklahoma's commitment to harnessing the power of technology to advance education. The Oklahoma State Department of Education encourages all school districts to utilize the guidance document as a roadmap for integrating AI into their educational practices.

The OSDE will also provide virtual professional learning opportunities for educators and administrators to learn more about AI in education.

Released Items Added to Framework

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is releasing sample Oklahoma State Testing Program (OSTP) assessment items to illustrate how state assessments might be designed to measure specific learning standards or objectives. These examples are intended to provide teachers and students with a clearer understanding of how the state assesses Oklahoma's academic standards and their objectives. It is important to note that these sample items are not intended to be used for diagnostic or predictive purposes.

Released items will be found on the OKMath Framework at the bottom of each objective analysis that the item is aligned to. Please note, there is not a released item for every objective and some objectives have more than one item. More items will continue to be added to the framework as they are released.

You could use these items as bell work, helping students understand distractors, and as an extension of learning. Use this guide as a way to help incorporate these items in your classroom.

OSU Learning Opportunities

osu

Oklahoma State University is offering different opportunities for professional learning in June. Registration is open until May 31, 2024.

  • Problem solving is a critical mathematical behavior, but many students remain stuck on procedures and repetition rather than creative and critical thinking. In this session, teachers will learn strategies to support their students’ engagement in productive mathematical problem solving within the standards that we teach every day. Professional learning will include how noticing and wondering can open up mathematical problems, using mathematical representations to problem solve, and more strategies that can be used in PK‐8 mathematics lessons to spark student thinking!
  • Participants will learn how to help students build their multiplicative understanding through games and activities that can be done in the classroom. Strategies to help students build fluency with multiplication will also be taught. Participants can expect to leave with materials for games and activities to help them as they teach their students.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is seeking a skilled and motivated Project Manager for Mathematics to oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Mathematics. This crucial role involves organizing standards revisions, collaborating with committees, developing guidance resources, and delivering professional development initiatives for districts and at state conferences.
