Statutory Waiver/Deregulation for an Abbreviated Day

If you do not have an approved Waiver* for the FY25 school year, please begin to start the process of applying for a waiver. Waivers will be accepted from April 1 through October 1.

*STATUTORY WAIVERS – COOP Agreement – When a public school wants to serve fewer than 10 students in the AltEd program instead of entering into a COOP with another district.

OAC 210: 35-29-2 Use both citations for an alternative school to operate with abbreviated hours, less than 4 hours and 12 minutes of instruction per day, five days a week, or 756 hours. per year.

Alternative Education Coding Procedures

Districts now have the opportunity to access the Alt Ed tab in the ASR. The ASR is open for review purposes only, but it is the perfect time for districts to check the students listed in the Alt Ed tab. Only students who have a student participation record in the student information system (SIS) will populate under the Alt Ed tab. Only students in this tab will qualify for Alt Ed funding when the ASR is certified at the end of the school year. An Alt Ed check mark (indicator) for the student is NOT a student participation record. Check with your SIS vendor for specific instructions related to creating Student Participation records.

Program Highlights-Grove Alternative Academy

Grove Alternative Academy went on what has become an annual Stream Walk. This year's Stream Walk took place at Horse Creek, a tributary of Grand Lake. Upon arriving at the stream students were greeted by Blue Thumb staff members Candice Miller, Briant Nguyen, and Cheryl Cheadle. Blue Thumb is an arm of the Oklahoma Conservation Commission. Blue Thumb trains volunteers to monitor water quality in streams throughout the state of Oklahoma. They also provide a wide range of educational opportunities to students and adults.

The field trip began with Candice Miller educating the students on stream ecology, water quality, and how riparian zones help improve the stream ecosystem. Smaller groups of students were then formed and trained on how to use kick nets and seines. While using the kick nets, students collected aquatic macroinvertebrates, aka insect larvae, snails, crayfish, and worms. After each collection, Cheryl Cheadle helped students identify the macroinvertebrates and discussed how they were indicators of water quality. Students used the seines to collect fish. After pulling the seine through various parts of the stream, Candice Miller and Briant Nguyen would help students identify the different species of fish collected and explained the role each fish played in the ecosystem.

Students were given additional time to explore Horse Creek on their own. Many used that time to ask questions about plants, freshwater mussels, and animals that frequented the stream. Before leaving Horse Creek and returning to school, students picked up litter to perform a Community Service.

Program Highlights-Anadarko

Anadarko: The deadCenter Film Festival, held in OKC each spring, is doing an education tour to AltEd programs. They did a presentation today and donated a camera, tripod, wireless microphone, clapboard & LED lights to the program. They explained the different career options associated with filmmaking.They also gave each student a deadCenter Film Festival t-shirt.The students really enjoyed it!
