The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is excited to announce it will be hosting educator workshops across Oklahoma in October and November 2023. Various offices, including Teaching and Learning, Indian Education, and Special Education, will host half-day and/or full-day professional learning sessions.
The literacy workshops are featured below along with their dates, cities, and registration links. More details including times and locations can be found in the Fall 2023 Literacy Regional Workshops document. Space is limited, so register today!
Writing in the Elementary Classroom with Sharon Morgan
The goal of this session is for elementary teachers to gain knowledge of foundational writing skills and how to utilize the new writing resources from the ELAOK framework to support students throughout the writing process. This session will conclude by analyzing and assessing the qualities of student writing samples.

Leveraging the Writing Resources from the ELA Framework with Jason Stephenson
Teachers of grades 6-12 ELA will learn how to use the writing resources suite of the ELA Framework to improve instruction and learning of narrative, informative, argumentative, and research writing. Teachers will explore the uses of the revision and editing checklists, student writing samples with teacher feedback, and the peer feedback lesson resources.

Data Decisions: Teacher Assessments and Interventions

Educators in this session will have an opportunity to administer a diagnostic assessment, discuss assessment results and how to use them to design instruction, and participate in interactive interventions. A data discussion flow chart will be shared to use as a guideline in making instructional decisions.
The Big 5 + 1 in Action
Brianna Brejcha, Jessica Oaks, Elizabeth Reed
This session will begin by reviewing the 5 major elementary of literacy plus writing. The remainder of the session will be spent participating in interactive centers that can be implemented in classrooms across elementary settings. Participants will leave the session with practical tools that can be used in the classroom the next day.
Valuable PLCs and Data Meetings
Lindsay Sizemore, Emily Banta, Holly McBride
Principals, instructional coaches, team leads, or anyone that leads Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and data meetings will find this session valuable! Participants will explore ways to add value to PLCs through incorporating data discussions. Interactive activities will lead them through the data cycle, assessment types, and data discussions using questions that can be implemented immediately.
Dyslexia Takeout: Definition, Characteristics, The Reading Brain, and Instructional Systems
Rhonda Reader, Audria Sample, Hannah Hedden
Teachers, specialists, administrators, and staff will dive into the dyslexia experience to learn more about this common specific learning disability that affects so many students when learning to read. By the end of this session, educators will be equipped with a comprehensive toolkit spanning tiered instructional systems for dyslexia. They will leave with a deeper understanding of the reading brain, dyslexia, practical strategies for tiered support, and the confidence to create inclusive and effective learning environments for all students.
The Simple View of Reading
Lisa Campbell, Kim Seaton, Courtney Hayes
Participants will explore the Simple View of Reading, how this model helps to frame the research for the science of reading, and how to use the model as a template to evaluate current literacy practices. Along with the selection, structure, and content of interventions, participants will discuss instruction for the core classroom and monitoring student progress. Strategies for interventions that address decoding and language comprehension will be explored in this interactive session in which participants will have the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to gather new ideas for best practices.
