Student Support is now the Office of Student Development

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all have had some time to relax, unwind, enjoy family and friends, and recharge. We are thrilled to have everyone back and ready to make a positive difference in the lives of our incredible Oklahoma students.

I wanted to take a moment to share some restructuring changes in the Office of Student Support. First of all, to reduce confusion with the School Support office at the OSDE (this happens quite frequently), we have decided to change our name to “Student Development” which we feel most accurately reflects the vision of our office. We have also added the College & Career Readiness office under the Student Development umbrella which just seemed like a natural fit.

Additionally, I have accepted a new position here as the Division Administrator of School & District Supports, which includes the Office of Student Development. With this change, we have promoted Marissa Lightsey from our College & Career Readiness program to Program Director, Student Development, and Jennifer Peters to Program Manager, College & Career Readiness. Join me in congratulating Marissa and Jennifer! They both bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, and leadership skills to their positions, and I am excited to see the amazing work both will do for Student Development!

Your dedication and support are truly invaluable, and together, we will create a top-notch learning environment. Remember, we're all here to educate, uplift and inspire all our young scholars! Go make this year the best one yet!

AWAREITY Reporting System

Community input is highly valued as school and district leaders make important decisions related to providing a safe, secure and healthy school environment. The AWAREITY reporting system provides a quick and convenient way to report a wide range of concerns.

Reports can be submitted about bullying/cyberbullying, child nutrition, civil rights, curriculum and instruction (including potential violations of HB 1775), fraud/embezzlement, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, legal concerns, professional standards/educator conduct, safety and security, school board complaints, data security and privacy, suicide/self-harm, sex discrimination or sexual harassment.

In most cases, you can submit your report completely anonymously if you choose to.

This reporting system is not intended to replace direct contact with school leaders. Please feel free to contact your local school or district office directly with any issues or concerns you may have.  After a concern has been submitted, immediate notifications are sent to the appropriate personnel for further review if warranted.

You may submit a report here.

Goodwill Donation Center

Last week our Alternative Education team had the opportunity to tour the Goodwill Donation Center in Oklahoma City.  We all thought Goodwill just accepted clothing and resold them.  Well here is a little history lesson.

Goodwill was founded in 1902 in Boston by Rev. Edgar J. Helms a Methodist minister and early social innovator.  Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired those who were poor to mend and repair the used goods.  The goods were then resold or were given to the people who repaired them.  The system worked and the Goodwill philosophy of "a hand up, not a hand out" was born.

What our team learned is Goodwill is an employer, community partner, advanced career center for training and so much more.  If you are interested in the Goodwill talking to your Alternative Education students you can contact Lisa Dillion at ldillion@okgoodwill.org. What a wonderful partnership this could be for your students. They have centers all across Oklahoma.
