Health and Physical Education Resources Logo

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is excited to share the new 2023 Health and Physical Education Standards as teachers will start implementing these standards in the 2023-24 school year. The OSDE and teachers from around the state have developed the Health and Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks (Phase 1) to assist with the implementation of the new Health and Physical Education Standards. Also, be sure to check out the information about the Health Education Micro-Credential. In this edition, learn about these opportunities and more.

New! 2023 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Health and Physical Education

Oklahoma Academic Standards for Physical Education

The 2023 Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS) for Health and Physical Education are based on the 2016 OAS for Health and Physical Education and are a revision of those standards.

The eight overarching standards for health remain the same, but the objectives in Standard 1 have been revised to address new legislative requirements in the Health Education Act (A.10).

The five overarching standards for physical education remain the same, but various objectives have been revised to increase emphasis on physical activity in daily life (e.g., outdoor pursuits) and to strengthen the interrelation of physical and mental well-being as required by Maria's Law.

New! Health and Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks

Health and Physical Education Frameworks Project Logo

During the 2022-23 school year, two teams of Oklahoma educators developed the Health and Physical Education Curriculum Frameworks website to assist teachers with the implementation of the 2023 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Health and Physical Education. Phase 1 of the project included the following: objective analysis pages with student actions, teacher actions, teacher insights, and key understanding. Also, the Physical Education Framework Project includes instructional resources for each and every objective PreK through 12th grade!

A big thank you to all of the writers for this project:

Health Education Legislation in Oklahoma FAQs

Law Image

Recent legislation called the Health Education Act (70 O.S. § 11-103.13) and Maria’s Law (70 O.S. § 11-103.9b) requires school districts to provide instruction addressing all health education subject matter standards by the 2023-24 school year including mental health instruction. Find guidance for this legislation in the Health Education Legislation in Oklahoma FAQs. If you have questions, reach out to Shana Classen, Director of Health and Physical Education.

New! Health Education Micro-Credential

Health Education Micro-Credential

The OSDE is excited to share the virtual professional development learning modules for the health education micro-credential on July 10th, which was created in compliance with the Health Education Act (70 O.S. § 11-103.13) to support educators who will be implementing health education instruction for PreK-12th grade students during the 2023-2024 school year and beyond.

These virtual learning modules provide a foundation of knowledge and build the capacity of best practices for teaching effective health education. Please create an account at OSDE Connect, the online learning platform at https://osdeconnect.pdx.catalog.canvaslms.com/ or get direct here to access the Health Education Micro-Credential and start the journey to earn a micro-credential in health education. If you need guidance to create an account and access the Health Education Micro-Credential on OSDE Connect, click here.

The OSDE utilizes Credly, the largest digital credential network, to issue digital badges for this micro-credential. A micro-credential currently does not count toward the Health and Physical Education certification process. However, a micro-credential can bolster a teacher's resume and prepare them for health education integration into different subjects, including physical education.

Pilot Program: Health Education Open Educational Resources

Oklahoma Academic Standards for Health Cover Page

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is seeking 30 PK-12 educators to pilot a set of open educational resources for health education. The purpose of these open educational resources is to provide educators with instructional resources aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Health Education.

The open educational resources are designed to support districts with the implementation of the Health Education Act (70 O.S. § 11-103.13) and prepare teachers to provide quality health education to PK-12 students.

The pilot will transpire in two phases: secondary (i.e., grades 6th-8th and 9th-12th) in Fall 2023 and elementary (i.e., grades PreK-2nd and 3rd-5th) in Spring 2024. Those selected to complete and review the open educational resources will be asked to prepare, implement, and provide feedback on approximately three (3) lessons per month for four months to receive a stipend for up to one thousand and two hundred dollars ($1,200.00) for work outside of school contracted hours. In order to receive compensation, the participant must have a current teacher certification number.

The feedback from the open educational resources will be utilized to improve the resources and make them ready for use statewide in the summer of 2024.

If you are interested in participating in the pilot and providing feedback on the Health Education Open Educational Resources, please complete this form by July 21st, 2023. If you have questions, email Shana Classen, Director of Health and Physical Education.

Spotlight Story

Painted Play Spaces

The Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment's (TSET) Healthy Living Program is a grant program designed to prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease by preventing and reducing tobacco use and obesity on a local level. Comanche County Memorial Hospital (CCMH) is one of 35 grantees that serves 37 counties in Oklahoma. In 2004, CCMH was awarded the first round of community grants from TSET and has been serving Comanche County ever since.

The goals of the program are to help citizens make the healthy choice, the easy choice. Using best practices and data, CCMH works with city and county governments, schools, community organizations, and businesses to encourage healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco-free environments. CCMH works hard to address unhealthy behaviors before they have a chance to become unhealthy habits.

Dragonfly Hopscotch: Painted Play Spaces

Under the direction of Sandy Foster, CCMH has implemented Painted Play Spaces (PPS) at several local schools and community organizations. The purpose of PPS is to enhance the play environments by using colorful paint and stencils to create an array of recess games on existing hardscapes. Painted play spaces have increased physical activity and student engagement on school campuses. Other benefits of this program are that the kids and the administrators love these spaces. Sandy stated, "I have already heard how much the kids at the community centers are loving these and using them."  One of the schools has a summer program and the principal said, "The kids were loving it."

CCMH is so appreciative of the partnership with the OSDE as well as the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH). Since COVID, it has been difficult to get into the schools again. The PPS initiative has given CCMH an opportunity to rebuild relationships with area schools. CCMH has always had good relationships but this initiative has allowed them to strengthen these relationships. In addition, it has been a wonderful opportunity to talk about other health priorities. Every school that participated in PPS also allowed CCMH to come in and share the "Smarter Lunchroom Scorecard" which is another one of CCMH's goals.
