Introducing the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy Curriculum Framework

The Oklahoma State Department of Education is excited to announce the publication of the new Oklahoma Curriculum Framework for Personal Financial Literacy on June 1, 2023.

The curriculum frameworks provide a detailed breakdown of the intent of each of the objectives in the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy as well as examples of what teachers may do to support students with those objectives and what students may be doing if they are achieving those objectives. The curriculum frameworks also identify key concepts and common misunderstandings associated with each objective and provide sample lesson ideas, inquiry-based tasks,  and instructional resources to support teaching and learning in the personal financial literacy classroom.

Old West Buffalo Company

Old West Buffalo Company offers an up-close bison experience for students. They have created a safe way for guests to hand-feed and interact with bison from the safety of a  large covered deck.

The Buffalo Encounter begins with an original short film projected onto a large screen in the Old West Theater. During this 12 minute film, students will get an overview of the 200,000 year history of the bison with a primary focus on their epic tale of survival during the late 1800’s. The film takes students from prehistoric times when bison latifrons crossed the Bering strait from Asia into what is now North America. It explains how they survived the Ice Age and several multi-century droughts. It also details the main factors involved in their near-extinction, showcasing six key individuals who endeavored to save them.

After the film, students spend about 30 minutes with the bison herd and have the opportunity to hand feed them. During this time they talk about the many unique things about bison and students have the chance to ask questions. After a trip to the hand-washing station, they spend time in the Bison Hall of Fame where they take a deeper dive into the passion of the people who were determined to save the bison from extinction.

The Buffalo Encounter lasts about one hour and can be extended to 90 minutes if students bring a brown bag lunch.  If you would like more information about student group tours, please contact Old West Buffalo Company at 918-895-0788 or fill out the contact form on their website at oldwestbuffalo.com.

They are located right on US Highway 60 just 5 minutes west of Pawhuska.
