Oklahoma Math Tutoring Corps

OMTC Stats

Registration for the 2023-24 Oklahoma Math Tutoring Corps is now open for Oklahoma students who will be in grades 7, 8 and 9, in the fall. This high-dosage tutoring program provides 50-minute virtual tutoring sessions three times a week in groups of no more than four students. Schools can share this flyer to encourage families to register their students.

Tutor applications are now available for educators with an active Oklahoma teaching certificate, higher education professors and representatives, retired educators, and college students. Those interested in being a tutor can find the application here. The initial deadline for tutor applications is 5:00 PM Friday, May 26, 2023.

College Career Math Ready and Ready for High School Math Summer Workshop

In addition to the students who, in a typical year, would need extra support, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted learning for the majority of Oklahoma students, and national studies indicate that the core subject most impacted is mathematics. We now face a collective challenge – how to support students to be algebra-ready. Mathematics skills build over time, and algebra readiness is critical for success in higher-level mathematics and other postsecondary opportunities.

The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is continuing to develop teacher capacity to teach the College Career Math Ready course and the Ready for High School Math course. Ready for High School Math (HSMR) is a course that emphasizes the understanding of math concepts and develops the critical-thinking skills students need throughout their high school studies. The curriculum is designed for eighth/ninth-grade students. College Career Math Ready (CCMR) is a course designed to help seniors master math skills before transitioning from high school to postsecondary education and the workplace. In this course, students increase their problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills.

Teachers who have been trained receive the curriculum needed to implement the courses in their school. Math teachers holding an intermediate mathematics or advanced certification are eligible to teach both courses. There will be in-person training for both courses on July 26-27, 2023  at Stillwater Junior High in Stillwater, Oklahoma! Register now to ensure a spot. Deadline to apply is June 1, 2023.

If you have any questions about the math-ready courses, feel free to contact Anthony Purcell, Director of High School and College Math Readiness at anthony.purcell@sde.ok.gov, or Brigit Minden, Director of Secondary Mathematics at brigit.minden@sde.ok.gov.

Bootstrap: Enhanced and Engaging Math Instruction with Modern Tools

OSDE Bootstrap Hybrid

Don’t miss out: new cohort begins May 30 (online), in-person June 12-13, 2023!

Bootstrap: Enhanced and Engaging Math Instruction with Modern Tools

Graphing calculators were built to enhance math instruction and are now part of every Algebra teacher’s toolkit. But despite the hype, attempts to take computer programming languages and drop them in math classes haven't been quite so successful.

Four years ago, the Oklahoma State Department of Education partnered with Bootstrap on a National Science Foundation grant to change that. The result is a series of engaging curricular materials and techniques for Oklahoma teachers, which apply mathematical concepts to real-world and creative projects while strengthening students’ understanding of the math they need to learn. Best of all, these materials integrate with the curriculum you already teach, so you can build on your expertise and leverage what you know!

Math teachers in grades 6-12 from across Oklahoma have been using Bootstrap in their classes, with more than 95% saying they would choose to teach Bootstrap again. This year’s cohort is launching with an initial virtual component starting May 30th and in-person June 12th and 13th, and virtual PDs each quarter to support you. Thanks to the National Science Foundation, your professional development and materials are completely free - including printed materials for your students! Join your colleagues from across the Sooner State, and help build the growing, cutting-edge community of practice to bring rigorous math to all students in Oklahoma.

This experience is not a “one-and-done” professional development; instead, this cohort offers an ongoing professional learning experience that spans the course of a semester. By applying for a spot in the Summer 2023 Bootstrap Cohort, you are agreeing to participate in the following (if selected):

    • Individual Online Work (over two weeks): approximately five hours total beginning May 30th.
    • Group Professional Development Sessions Start In-Person:
      • June 12 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) and June 13 (9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) in Tulsa, OK.
      • Participants who live more than 65 miles away from this location may be reimbursed for the cost of a hotel room for one night.
  • Group Professional Development Sessions Continue Virtually:
    • Three 1.5-day online workshops occur quarterly throughout the school year
    • Friday (4 hours) & Saturday (6 hours)
  • Participants who participate in the workshop may receive a stipend of up to $300 ($150 for Individual Online Work & In-Person workshop, $150 for completion of all three Virtual follow-up workshops).

Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on May 25th. Acceptance notifications will be sent via email by May 28th.
