Theatre Teacher Bootcamp: Everything you didn't learn in college and have been faking ever since

Krista Carson Elhai, Vice President, Educational Theatre Association

It’s not enough to walk into your classroom and be a great teacher and direct good shows. Theatre educators are running a small business and need a plan of action. You’ll leave this PD with ideas to implement immediately, and a blueprint to take your program to the next level. Topics will include: 1-3-5-year planning for your theatre department; training student leaders; strategic planning for fundraisers; getting buy-in and support from your administrator; marketing your brand, tapping into your alumni network; and strategies to create a network of community members who can help support your program.

Universal Design for Learning and the Art Room: Creating a Learning Environment Where ALL Students can be Successful

Chris Hall, Visual Arts Educator, Boston Public Schools

With his eleven years of experience working with students with significant challenges in the art room, Chris will provide art educators with a new perspective on disability, accessibility, and Universal Design for Learning in order to create a classroom environment where all students can be successful. Participants will discuss and examine the challenges that art educators in Oklahoma may face when educating students with disabilities in the art room. Through interactive and hands-on activities, educators will learn some practical strategies that will help proactively remove barriers to learning for students and meet the needs of all learners. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of disability, accessibility, and classroom strategies that they can implement immediately in order to provide students with access to high quality arts education.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the sessions be recorded or streamed?

  • Due to the many sessions and the hands-on nature of the event, sessions will not be recorded or streamed online.

Can I attend 1 day or 1.5 days of the Summer Academy?

  • No, all accepted attendees should plan to attend two full days of professional development.

I don't teach dance or visual art - do I have to attend those sessions?

  • No. You will attend sessions in the area of your choice for all 10 hours of professional development. For example, if you are a music educator, you will be learning from Dr. Alice Hammel for 5 hours on day one and 5 hours on day two. This will allow you to have a deep learning experience with the clinician and fellow participants.

If 40 teachers are accepted per discipline area, how does that work?

  •  There is a $100 per day stipend for attendees, so we are limited to 40 teachers per discipline. Attendees will mostly be decided by "first come, first serve." If a lot of teachers from one district signed up (for example, 15 music teachers from a larger district), then a committee from the OSDE Curriculum and Instruction department will decide who will be attending and who will not (based on responses in the application) to offer equal opportunity to teachers in districts from across the state.

Where is the Mustang Performing Arts Center?

  • The Mustang PAC is just north of Mustang HS in Mustang, OK. Mustang is a community located southwest of Oklahoma City. The exact address for the PAC is: 200 W Juniper Dr., Mustang, OK 73064

Is there a cost to attend?

  • There is not a cost to attend. Teachers will be paid a stiped for attending.

The application asks for my teacher certification number. How do I find that?

  • Your teacher cert number is on the top right corner of your teacher certificate. You can also find your certification number in the OSDE's information portal called "Single Sign On." You may need to create an account to log in and see your info.

Is lunch provided?

  • Lunch is not provided, but there are restaurants and fast food places in Mustang and nearby in Yukon. Attendees are also welcome to bring their lunch.

If I'm traveling from a few hours away, where do I stay? Is there hotel or travel reimbursement?

  • There is no hotel or travel reimbursement for attendees. Attendees are welcome to  make reservations at any nearby hotels.
