Celebrate National Braille Literacy Month in January!

braille

Oklahoma ABLE Tech is proud to have supported our own in-house volunteer braillist, Jan Lavine, as the invited presenter at the December 1, 2022, Zoom meeting of the “I Love Braille” group sponsored by the East Bay Center for the Blind of Berkeley, California (EBCB). As both a Library of Congress certified braille transcriber and braille proofreader, Jan spoke about braille proofreading: the qualifications, tools used, proofreading reports, and notable proofreading errors she has encountered over the years. The “EBCB I Love Braille” participants for Jan’s talk were both domestic and international, with the furthest to attend hailing from India, Nigeria, and Cape Town, South Africa.

Participant feedback included such comments as: “Today’s I Love Braille was really one of the best”; and “Jan, the guest speaker today, was highly interesting, positive, enthusiastic, and articulate. What a pleasure to hear her speak! Kudos to you, Professor Shah, for arranging this outstanding guest speaker! I greatly admire all that Jan has done with braille and will continue to do in the braille field.”

Way to go, Jan, Happy National Braille Literacy Month, and a Happy World Braille Day on January 4, 2023!

Listen to Jan's presentation to the ECBC "I Love Braille" group.

Spring AT Workshop Series Starts January 19th

From the Center for Parent Information and Resources (CPIR):

Assistive technology (AT) enables children with disabilities to participate more fully in all aspects of life (home, school, and community) and helps them access their right to a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. The IEP team must determine whether an individual child needs an assistive technology device or service, and if so, the nature and extent to be provided.

Hundreds of IEP team members attend ABLE Tech’s AT Workshop Series every year to learn how to help students find and acquire needed AT solutions. If you haven’t attended the training series before, or if you have but need a refresher, hope you’ll make time to attend!

Dates have been set for the Spring 2023 AT Workshop Series:

  • Part 1 – January 19 – Consideration of AT
  • Part 2 – February 16 – Gathering Information and Trialing Devices
  • Part 3 – March 23 – AT in the IEP and Implementation

These workshops will take place via Zoom from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. on their designated dates. Visit the Oklahoma ABLE Tech AT Support Team Workshops webpage to register!
