The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is excited to announce the publication of a new guidance document, Engineering in the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science. This document serves as a guide to help educators better understand the role of engineering in science learning aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S). It includes the vision and guiding attributes for the selected engineering ideas and skills, a resource to help educators better understand the distinguishing practices between science and engineering, and highlights the K-12 learning progressions for the engineering ideas that are integrated within the OAS-S.
Districts and schools can use this new resource when planning how to integrate engineering into their science classes, identifying the prior knowledge and skills students have learned before entering a specific grade level, identifying how the current grade level supports future development of skills and ideas, and as a guide for a team of educators working to ensure their courses are vertically aligned.
For questions, please contact Heather Johnston, Director of Secondary Science and Engineering, Heather.Johnston@sde.ok.gov.
Do you teach a STEM elementary class or a middle/high school STEM/engineering elective? Do you wish you could connect with other educators that teach courses similar to yours? The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is looking to develop STEM, including engineering, collaborative spaces to connect and support the implementation of engineering and technology skills and concepts. These collaborative spaces would provide the OSDE and Oklahoma educators opportunities to learn together, share current challenges, and develop resources that can better support student engagement in STEM. If you are interested in sharing highlights and stories from your classroom and/or participating in future collaborative opportunities, please take a moment to fill out this survey. The survey should take about 5-10 minutes to complete. If you have any questions, please contact Christine.Koerner@sde.ok.gov, Executive Director of STEM Education, or Heather.Johnston@sde.ok.gov, Director of Secondary Science and Engineering.
