Teacher Certification Questions

As schools have been completing their Teaching Out Of Certification waiver, we have received questions about emergency certified teachers and adjunct teachers.  We want to send some clarification on this regarding who qualifies for the waiver and who does not.

Adjunct teachers are not considered certified teachers, so they do not qualify for the Teaching Out Of Certification waiver.  Adjunct teachers have a teacher number that starts with the letter "A".  The approval for them to teach is approved by the local school board and only lasts for one year.

Emergency certified teachers do qualify for the Teaching Out Of Certification waiver.  These are teachers who are working towards full certification and have an approved emergency certification from OSDE.

Please remember the Teaching Out Of Certification waiver is only good for certified teachers in a program that meets the 16 criteria for Alternative Education programs in 70 O.S. § 1210-568.

High School Course Code Updates

OSDE, in partnership with the Oklahoma Regents of Higher Education, has approved Aviation Technology (3580) to count as a core credit for Computer Technology for Oklahoma’s Promise and college admissions.

Districts currently offering Aviation courses that include instruction in engineering and/or technology in aviation can utilize the new Aviation Technology (3580) course code for courses and count the courses as meeting computer technology requirements for both the College Preparatory/Work Ready and CORE Curriculum graduation requirements. Please review the Curriculum Checklists for specific graduation requirements of each pathway.

Additionally, Psychology (5641) and Sociology (5720) are eligible to count as the additional unit for the College Preparatory/Work Ready Curriculum requirements.

If you have questions, contact Jenna Jones at jenna.jones@sde.ok.gov.

Mental Health Guidance

Mental Health Guidance

New! Oklahoma Mental Health Legislation became effective July 1, 2022. We know that there are many questions regarding this new legislation and the implementation of new policies and procedures in your schools. In response the Division of School Based Mental Health within the office of Student Support has created a guidance document aligned to the recently released red book mental health legislation components. Webinar Report

We had 177 schools register and 1063 students watch our first ALTed Talks webinar!  We are so happy you and your students joined to listen to Mr. Alton Carter and are looking forward to our upcoming webinars!

Congratulations to the winner of the classroom set of books: Caney Valley School (by Shawnee) and the winner of Alton's personal presentation is Norman Dimensions.

Below are a few comments we received after the webinar:

“Love this idea of ALTed Talks!!  Mr. Carter was an amazing choice for the 1st meeting of the year as ALL of our kids can relate to him.  We brought in donuts, milk, and juice for our kids, had a group breakfast, then watched the talk.  The kids really liked the speaker and I was surprised with how much they enjoyed seeing all the other kids out there who are just like them”.

“You could have heard a pin drop in our lobby as the students watched. If this is an example of what is to come, the students are going to love this series. Thank you for this; what a wonderful opportunity for all of us!”

“I gave our students doodle books for the talks and they sketched and took notes throughout the presentation.’
