The Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts were last reviewed and revised in 2019. Per state law (70 O.S. § 11-103.6a), standards must be reviewed in accordance with the Oklahoma instructional materials adoption cycle. With some changes to the Oklahoma Textbook Adoption Cycle, the Fine Arts Standards are up for review again this year. Over the past few months, an Executive Committee of dance, drama/theatre, music, and visual arts educators and stakeholders have been reviewing the 2020 standards to determine if any changes are needed. The Committee also added media arts as a new fine arts discipline.
The draft 2023 Oklahoma Academic Standards for Fine Arts will be available for public comment later this fall. Public comment is the process where teachers, administrators, parents, community members, etc., may give feedback on the standards. The standards will be available to view online, and there will be an email address for viewers to submit comments. Every comment will be addressed by the executive committee. We especially value teacher feedback and would appreciate your participation.
When the public comment window opens, there will be multiple notifications sent out over social media and through this newsletter. More information about the standards process is available on the OSDE website.

The OSDE, in partnership with educators around the state, has developed a draft of public speaking competencies. If you are a high school teacher who teaches a public speaking course, please take some time to review the document and provide feedback using this form. Public speaking is not the same course as competitive speech and acting (which utilizes the Oklahoma Academic Standards in Drama/Theatre), though there are some commonalities.
The public speaking competencies will exist as a draft during the 2022-2023 school year.
The University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) is hosting student visitation events this fall. Registration for all events will open soon here: https://www.uco.edu/cfad/ocae/. Questions? Email ocae@uco.edu.
