Paid Student Teaching Initiative: Updates Regarding Second Payment

OSDE is investing federal relief dollars to compensate qualified candidates for their work as student teachers through the Paid Student Teaching Initiative. The program funds Oklahoma student teachers through school year 2023-24.

OSDE and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) have partnered to provide payments of up to $3,250 to each student teacher approved by Educator Preparation Providers. For the first cohort (fall 2021), the OSDE transferred applicable funds to the OSRHE, which distributed the first payment of $1,625 to qualified student teachers in the first week of student teaching.

The second $1,625 payment will be distributed to the Oklahoma public school district that hires the student teacher, and the district will then pay the student teacher directly. The OSDE is currently working with the qualified candidates to obtain verification that they are contracted with a public school starting in January. OSDE will contact hiring school districts to disseminate the second payment of $1,625.

In addition to the second payment of $1,625, the OSDE will also cover the hiring district’s share of the FICA (7.65%).

Implementing Student Transfer Reforms (Senate Bill 783)

Note: There have been minor changes to the linked documents below.

With the enactment of Senate Bill 783 (2021), the Oklahoma Legislature made comprehensive reforms to Oklahoma’s school transfer laws, namely revising the requirements for accepting and denying student transfers and requiring school districts to set and list enrollment capacities on their websites.

These changes, among others, go into effect Jan. 1 and make students eligible to request a transfer to any district in the state, regardless of where they live.

The following resources will help parents and schools navigate these changes and can be found on OSDE’s Student Transfers webpage.

Due Jan. 14: Reading Sufficiency Act Survey

Each year, OSDE completes a report on the Reading Sufficiency Act (RSA) for the Oklahoma Legislature. Data from this report is used to determine what, if any, additional policies and/or resources are needed to ensure all students receive the reading instruction they need to be successful.

In order to provide valuable and accurate information for this report, we need the help of Oklahoma teachers and administrators. If you work with students in any grade(s) between kindergarten and fifth grade for reading instruction, please take a few moments to complete the survey below.

Access the survey here.

The survey is completely anonymous and will take approximately 5 minutes to complete.

The survey will remain open until close-of-business Jan. 14.

Thank you for participating.
