Oklahoma Academic Standards Available for Public Comment

OSDE is seeking feedback on the revised draft of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for mathematics, physical education, health education and world languages (other than English), which are up for review and revision in 2021. The OSDE facilitates a revision of academic subject matter standards every six years in accordance with 70 O.S. § 11-103.6a.

Academic subject matter standards are concise, written descriptions of what students are expected to know and be able to do at a specific stage of their education. Academic standards describe educational objectives (i.e., what students should have learned by the end of a course, grade level, or grade span), but they do not describe a particular teaching practice, curriculum or assessment method.

OSDE asks that all interested stakeholders provide feedback on the standards by following the process below:

All feedback received during the public comment period will be reviewed by the OSDE and subject-area writing committee for consideration.

For additional information about the standards, visit the Standards Review & Revision Process webpage or contact Tiffany Neill at tiffany.neill@sde.ok.gov.

Due Nov. 30: Afterschool and Summer Learning & Enrichment Competitive Grant Applications

OSDE is seeking applications for $21 million in competitive grants focused on providing afterschool and summer learning and enrichment. These grants are available through ESSER-III state-level funds.

Funding from this grant must be used to establish or expand comprehensive afterschool and evidence-based summer learning and enrichment. It must provide direct services to meet the needs of students who have been traditionally underserved and disproportionately impacted by disruptions to learning resulting from the COVID pandemic.

For more information and to apply, visit the Expanded Learning webpage.

Applications are due Nov. 30 at 3 p.m.

For assistance with navigating the online grants management system, review these slides.

Due to the competitive nature of this application process, questions should be directed in writing to Paige Johnson at paige.johnson@sde.ok.gov.

Due Jan. 26: National Endowment for the Arts Big Read Grant Applications

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Big Read is a community engagement opportunity with grants available of up to $20,000 for community-wide reading programs.

Fifteen books representing a diverse range of contemporary themes, voices and perspectives are available for organizations interested in creating a reading program between September 2022 and June 2023. An initiative of the NEA in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read supports programs held around the country, each designed around a single NEA Big Read book selection with the goal of inspiring meaningful conversations, artistic responses and new discoveries and connections in each community.

Organizations can choose one of 15 available books during the 2022-23 programming cycle.

Past grantees have a proven track record of successfully engaging their audiences through the power of literature and stirring up a passion for reading that persists year after year. They've also developed meaningful and lasting partnerships with other organizations in their community, and program participants have the opportunity to meaningfully connect in-person and/or virtually.

Learn more about the application process here.

Applications are due Jan. 26.
