OKMath November Meet-Up

Each month, math educators will have the chance to come together virtually for professional learning and networking. These meetings are for any math educators and will focus on the Return to Learn: Launching Instruction for Secondary Mathematics.

This month, on Wednesday, November 11, we'll be exploring how Desmos can be used for a cycle of learning, whether you are teaching in-person or at a distance. We'll be talking about how to use the "Teacher-Side" of Desmos, including:

  • Creating a Teacher Account and Desmos Class
  • Finding and Assigning Class Activities
  • Tracking Student Progress and Providing Feedback

This meet-up is from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Register here to receive the Zoom link to join.

Can't make this meeting but still want to connect with other math educators? Check out additional opportunities on the Oklahoma State Department of Education Math website.

Data Talks in Mathematics

As more and more data is introduced into the world (Ninety percent of the world’s data has been created in the last two years! [Marr, 2018]), it is important that students understand how to read, analyze, and tell an accurate story using existing data and data of their own creation.

Data Science helps students to find patterns and make predictions across data sets. A quick way to bring Data Science to your classroom is by incorporating "Data Talks" into your instructional routine.

Data Talks are usually 5-10 minutes, where students are presented with data and notice, wonder, and interpret. Look at the graphs below. What do you notice? What do you wonder? What's going on in the graphs? How do you know? Jot down your own thoughts, then click on the image to watch middle school students participate in a data talk with the same information.
