The Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) is excited to launch a one-year project called Project SWITCH (Strengthening Wellness and Improving Teachers' and Children’s Health). As Oklahoma schools “SWITCH” gears to meet the challenges of COVID-19, this project offers opportunities for physical education teachers, school nurses or other individuals who provide these services to students to participate in communities of practice (networks of support). There will be a physical education leader and a school nurse leader in your region who will be developing these networks of support. Each leader will separately conduct three one-hour virtual meetings (between November 2020 and May 2021) to provide opportunities to network and assist you in understanding and possibly implementing aspects of the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) COVID-19 school-based guidance for physical education and/or school health services.
Please register to participate in the virtual meetings by filling out the registration form. Once you register, you will receive more information about the meetings and the support that will be provided through the virtual meetings. Also, you can receive professional assistance and support between scheduled virtual meetings by visiting the Project SWITCH's Webpage to access an assistance request form (or see below), and a regional leader will reach out to you.

In September, the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) reached out to inform physical education leaders in the state that they had fitness testing kits to give away to schools. Lindsi Lemons, Executive Director of Healthy Schools Oklahoma (HSOK), took immediate action and organized a meeting between TSET and Oklahoma State Department of Education to initiate a partnership and coordinate a fitness testing equipment distribution event.
HSOK, TSET, and OSDE thought it would be important to provide a training resource for individuals who received the equipment. Therefore, Kym Hardin, HSOK's Physical Education and Health Coordinator, produced videos for each of the tests that measure students' fitness levels in the five components of fitness (cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition). Check out the fitness testing training resource along with demonstration videos.
The distribution event occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2020. Teachers, school nurses and principals came from Hennessey, Ripley, Wynnewood, Norman, and Noble to name a few. Moore, Mustang, Piedmont, and Guthrie Public Schools got equipment for all of their schools! Altogether 165 fitness testing kits were given to schools. Robbyn Glinsmann, Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator at Mustang Public Schools, delivered fitness testing kits to the district's 14 elementary, intermediate, and middle schools. Robbyn reported that "Everyone (Mustang Physical Education Teachers) loves them (fitness testing kits)!"
Thank you, TSET and Healthy Schools OK staff, for making this event possible.

November is National Diabetes Month. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases have resources available to help raise awareness and to share this year’s theme, Taking Care of Youth Who Have Diabetes. To access the National Diabetes Month 2020 Toolkit, click on the flyer below.
Indian Health Services has developed a resource called the Physical Activity Kit (PAK) which is based on the best and promising practices to increase physical activity. The PAK toolkit can be used in schools, communities, worksites, Head Start programs, elderly centers, and youth programs. The goal of the PAK is to increase the time American Indians and Alaskan Natives spend in medium to high physical activity for all ages across the lifespan. While the activities have been field tested to be culturally appropriate for Native communities, others might find PAK useful in their community. The PAK Curriculum's Book #3 can be a resource for Native American Games that have been modified for physical education or group physical activity. Learn more about the PAK Toolkit which includes videos and downloadable books.

Online Roll Dice
Have you ever needed dice but did not have any handy? There are now online dice that can help! Just type "Roll dice" in the Chrome Omnibar or Google search box, and you will have six different types of dice to choose from, ranging from 4-20 sides. Click the down arrow just under the dice-box, and you will find some other teacher tools, such as a 10-value spinner and a metronome.
Mote Voice Notes and Feedback
The Mote Chrome extension enables you to easily add voice notes and feedback to Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Classroom. This extension allows for more personalized feedback since students hear your voice providing the feedback. It is important to note that students must also have the Mote Chrome extension installed to be able to listen to the feedback read aloud. Mote also allows for translation into several different languages.
Flippity
Flippity easily turns any Google spreadsheet into a timeline, a badge creator, a spelling quiz, a scavenger hunt, a word search, or more. Teachers can use Flippity for a variety of purposes: to present to the class, to assess individual students, or to have students make their own creations. The site contains templates for both teachers and students and also provides detailed instructions for each template.
