Spotlight Story

September 13-19 was National Arts in Education Week. It's a time to celebrate the arts and their profound impact on education. Here in Oklahoma, we had a few virtual events to promote the week, including a webinar discussion hosted by Arts in Action in OKC. The webinar featured local Oklahoma teachers and artists as they shared their thoughts about teaching the arts, Covid-19, and racial equality. If you have a moment, take a listen!

Social-Emotional Learning Resources for Music Education

As students and teachers work through this time, there has been more focus on the social-emotional aspect of music education. Many resources and tools have been shared over the past few months and some are listed below. While performances and other traditional aspects of music education may be limited, SEL may be key to navigating our current reality.

PearDeck Arts Updates

If you have been teaching online over the past few weeks, you may be using Pear Deck. Pear Deck integrates with Microsoft and Google platforms to create more interaction and engage students in their online learning.

Pear Deck has released P.E., Drama, Art, and Music templates that you can easily use in your online or in person learning environment. The P.E. template could be used in dance classes, too! If you are new to Pear Deck, check out this webinar that Karen Leonard, OSDE Director of Education Technology, released over the summer.

Lyric Theatre Clubhouse

lyric clubhouse

Over the spring and summer, OKC's Lyric Theatre has developed "Lyric Kids' Clubhouse" - a children's show created in their OKC theatre utilizing local actors, dancers, and kids! The show is designed for young children with new episodes each week on Lyric's YouTube channel and Facebook page

Episodes help children normalize this time by discussing the many different issues happening and add a bit of silliness in as well. Elementary teachers - though the program may not be appropriate for all your students, consider asking some of your more self-assured students to send in videos with questions, jokes, or other topics as requested by Lyric. Parents can send videos to info@lyrictheatreokc.org
