Keri Byrd and Carly King, Physical Education Teachers at Washington Irving Elementary in Edmond Public Schools, noticed during the shut down in the spring that some students didn't have simple items in their homes to participate in the physical activities that they were sharing. Therefore, these two teachers took action to fill that gap and provide equipment in P.E. bags to help students feel prepared to learn and be physically active with blended or distance learning. Carly stated, "Each student received a P.E. bag with a jump rope, dice, balloon/paper plate paddle, fidget, playing cards, plastic coin, and some games to play at home." Along with the P.E. bags, families were provided activities and games on Canvas (learning management system) as well as a hard copy so families could have options of online or offline physical activities. Keri said, "I have played these games with students for years and they loved them. So, we simply adapted them (the games) to accommodate a variety of age and skill levels."
Keri and Carly also collaborated with the classroom teachers so the items included in the P.E. bags could be implemented into their lessons, too. For example, the music teacher is using the popsicle sticks for a rhythm activity. The dice are used in physical education with an activity called "Roll An Exercise," but the classroom teachers can use it for math with addition or multiplication. Here is a full list of Keri and Carly's activities.

Keri said, "Students have told us, "thank you," daily for giving them items they can use at home. We feel that it has allowed us to remain connected with our families. This project was made possible through a community partnership with Dr. Deren Flesher and Dr. Matt Maune, at Royal Oak Family Dental." With another donation from APN Healthcare, Keri and Carly have plans to continue to add items (i.e., plastic cups for cup stacking and rhythm activities) to the bags.
Thank you Keri and Carly for demonstrating initiative, perseverance, and service to your school community. Also, a big thank you to Royal Oak Family Dental and APN Healthcare for supporting teachers and students.

The goal of health education is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lifestyles. A skills-based approach is a best practice for delivering high-quality health education.
Health literacy is an important measure of the effectiveness of health education and is critical to ensuring that students have the ability to be healthy throughout their lives.
Health-literate people are able to address their own health needs along with the needs of others. They are able to obtain and apply knowledge and skills to enhance their own health and the health of others — both now and in the future as their needs change throughout their lives. Learn more at SHAPE America's Health Literacy Month webpage. Click on the calendar below to download and print either the English or Spanish edition.
Do you need fitness assessment equipment? The Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET) is giving free fitness testing equipment to schools. All you need to do is come pick the equipment up from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3rd. Check out the flyer below for more information.
Thank you, TSET for the equipment, and Healthy Schools OK, for hosting the distribution event.
The Oklahoma State Department of Education will make training available for those who want it, but it will not be required.
Due to the current health environment, Active Schools decided that instead of conducting "Take Your Parent to PE Week" this September, they are celebrating "Bring PE to Your Family Week" from October 19-23. This approach comes with silver linings. Families can conduct their physical education lesson at a time of their choosing, which will allow for all family members to participate. Students will have the opportunity to showcase their age-appropriate leadership skills by planning and facilitating a lesson with guidance from their teacher. OPEN PE is providing materials that empower teachers and students to introduce families to physical education in their homes.
PLEASE SIGN UP HERE. WHY? Because Active Schools can bring more media attention to "Bring PE to Your Family Week," and physical education in general, when we are able to report a large number of participating schools.
Also, SHAPE America is proud to support Active Schools' Bring PE to Your Family Week with free health and physical education resources for you to share with your parents to ensure a healthy and active home.

Also, included is an overview of how physical education teachers can recognize and respond to health emergencies. Please consult your school nurse and/or principal before posting this information in your school.
