Return to Learn Instructional Guidance for Secondary Mathematics
The Return to Learn: Launching Instruction series provides educators at all levels guiding questions and meaningful actions that might help the return to learning go more smoothly. The guidance is based upon the belief that progress in students’ academic growth cannot be made without attending to the safety, health, and emotional well-being of each student and teacher.
What would you like to see included in future math instructional guidance? After reading our Launching Instruction for Secondary Mathematics and/or Digital Tools guidance, please submit your recommendations using this survey.

Many districts are making week-by-week decisions as to whether students will be receiving in-person, blended, or distance learning. This is challenging when trying to plan a series of lessons. In the Return to Learn: Launching Instruction for Secondary Mathematics guidance document, pages 7-8, we present a cycle of learning that has been adapted for analog (no-tech) and digital (tech-based) learning. Consider using these adaptations whether you are in-person, blended, or at a distance, so that your students (and you) are able to quickly transition from one method of instruction to another without requiring re-planning and additional stress.
National Awardee Spotlight
Congratulations to Brigit Minden, our latest PAEMST Math National Awardee! Brigit represented Oklahoma for the 2019 Secondary PAEMST Cycle and earned $10,000 along with national recognition.
Brigit teaches math at Central High Public School in Marlow. She was the district’s Teacher of the Year in 2016, was on the writing team for the Oklahoma Mathematics Frameworks for three years and currently serves on the OKMath Advisory Board. She uses hands-on learning such as ziplining dolls for right triangle trigonometry functions, building solar hot dog cookers for parabolas, and discovering conic sections made out of modeling clay. Minden has been teaching for 10 years.
“I am passionate in sharing that no one is ‘bad at math.’ Most people just haven't had the right experiences yet,” Minden said.

NOTE: Due to the challenging times, there is much flexibility this year. The lesson portion of the application can be one that was completed during 2019-20 or the fall of 2020. The video may be an in-person or virtual lesson, highlighting instruction as well as student interaction. While student interaction is highly encouraged, it is not mandatory this cycle. The recording can be done through the virtual platform used for instruction or by setting up a camera to record the teacher and the computer.
- If you have any questions about your PAEMST application, please email christine.koerner@sde.ok.gov

Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring PAESMEM
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) recognize those who have made significant contributions to mentoring and thereby support the future productivity of the U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics, (STEM) workforce. The program was created to identify and recognize individuals and organizations that have contributed outstanding efforts in mentoring and have enhanced the participation of individuals (including persons with disabilities) who might not otherwise have considered or had access to opportunities in STEM disciplines and professions. Each Presidential Awardee receives a certificate signed by the President of the United States and a $10,000 award from NSF. Awardees are honored at an award ceremony which takes place in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations to Dr. Joe Cecil, a professor in the computer science department at Oklahoma State University, for being a PAESMEM National Awardee for 2020.
