Fine Arts Update

The new 2020 Fine Arts Standards are available and teachers may start implementing the standards in the 2020-21 school year. The overall standards document, as well as discipline-specific documents, are available on the Fine Arts website. Look at the bottom of the page to see the discipline-specific documents.

In support of the new standards, the OSDE will offer a session at Engage OK with a standards focus. The Fine Arts Session "An Introduction to the New Oklahoma Fine Arts Standards for Dance, Drama/Theatre, Music, and Visual Art" will be on Thursday, July 16, from 10:30-noon. Co-presenters will include Oklahoma arts educators who helped create the new standards. Join the conversation and learn about the new fine arts standards! You can find more information on the EngageOK site.

2020-21 Arts Guidance

Later this summer, we will be sharing additional guidance to support schools and teachers as they plan for instruction in the coming school year. Within that guidance, there will be more detailed information for dance, drama/theatre, music, and visual art teachers as they plan the 2020-21 school year. It is recommended that arts educators consider the guidance and do what they can to help limit Covid transmission.

TLE & Arts Educators

At the start of every school year, teachers across the state fill out their TLE Professional Learning (PL) Focus document. TLE stands for Teacher and Leader Effectiveness. This process is intended to give teachers choice in their professional growth and development.

As an arts educator, your PL Focus should give you the opportunity to attend arts-specific professional development, observe teachers in other buildings or districts, read and research a new concept (for example, culturally-responsive teaching), etc.

As you create your PL Focus for the 2020-21 school year, consider using the documents here as a reference. The documents use the Tulsa Model for the indicator/element. Arts educators should check with their district and see if the Tulsa Model or Marzano is preferred.

Regardless of the overall evaluation framework, arts educators are encouraged to utilize their PL Focus to gain access to arts-specific professional development, observe other arts educators, and expand personal knowledge of their discipline. If you have any questions about this process, please contact elizabeth.maughan@sde.ok.gov
