Grace in this Space

grace

As we begin distance learning for the youngest students in schools, each of us may still have questions or concerns as to how this will work for the next weeks. Early childhood educators across the state and nation, are trying to think of ways to reach every child and how to personalize lessons for all our class. We have all probably had this thought,  “How is this going to work?”  The Edutopia article, "Mindset for this Moment" has some great points that bear listing here.

  • Expect some trial and grace for plenty of error
  • Acknowledge the extraordinary
  • Reduce the workload (for yourself and your students)
  • No person is an island

This newsletter has some resources to help you with the planning and implementation of lessons in this new version of your "classroom".  The most important thing I want to relay to you is how valued you are and how critical it is to take care of yourself. Keep in touch with your teaching buddies. If you are looking for a group of teachers to join and have community, join the #OKEarlyEd community on Facebook.

Deb Wade, Director of Elementary ELA, shared the two articles that are so timely.  "Boosting Resilience Through Creativity", from Edutopia reminds us that asking questions, being curious, and experimenting with new ideas make us more resilient.  The second article is by Jennifer Gonzalez, Editor in Chief for cultofpedagogy.com. She wrote Find Your Marigold:  The One Essential Rule for New Teachers .  It was written a couple of years ago to encourage educators new to the teaching, its message couldn't be more appropriate to educators at this moment in time.

Virtual Meetings

Thank you to those of you able to connect to our first couple of virtual meet ups! If your meeting was at capacity and you could not get connected, we apologize. Know that we will have ongoing meetings coming up; stay connected through this newsletter and on our #OKEarlyEd Facebook  group.

Recordings are added and linked to the OSDE YouTube Channel. Thank you for your patience as we process these recordings!

Here are the agendas/slides from the meet-ups:

In an effort to support Oklahoma teachers as they prepare for distance learning, we've created Distance Learning Guidance documents for a variety of grade bands and disciplines. Each document provides guiding questions, practical advice, example activities, resources and options for staying connected, while also highlighting tasks that require no or low technology use. Check them out here: https://sde.ok.gov/covid19-instruction-support
