Spotlight Story

Comic Life 3

Shane Williams is a first year P.E. Teacher at Red Oak Elementary, in Moore Public Schools. He accepted this position last January after he graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma. When asked why he chose to teach physical education, Shane said, “I have always loved everything associated with physical activity, games, and sports. I knew that there was a need with childhood obesity becoming such an issue, so with all of that in mind, I saw it being a great fit for me!”

Shane started using technology to incorporate more visuals into his classroom shortly after he began teaching. Shane stated, “My school is home to the Deaf Education program in Moore, so visuals play a huge part in what I do.” He continued with, “I’m not overly tech savvy, but I am very creative. I saw a need to have better visuals for activities, so I began making it all myself.” Shane uses Comic Life 3 to create visuals for instant activities, station task cards, lead-up games, skill progressions, and themed activities (i.e., Dr. Seuss week). Comic Life 3 is an app that can be purchased on any mobile device or personal computer.  Shane said, “I first heard about Comic Life 3 from other professionals in our field. I follow some of the best on Twitter and Facebook, and it has helped me so much.”

Shane Williams' Ramopoly

During this period of social distancing, Shane has been utilizing his time well and creating distance learning opportunities for his students and their families using Comic Life 3. Recently, he has made a version of Monopoly, called "Ramopoly" specifically for his school. It is a cross-curricular game that incorporates trivia about each content area, trivia about teachers, and even physical activity. Shane said, "The parents and students have loved it. I have had other teachers reach out to make their own, especially with the whole distance learning situation. I think it is a resource that many students will be able to experience and benefit from, so that’s exciting!" Thank you, Shane, for sharing your creation and this resource for others to use. Your passion is evident! Check out Shane's "Ramopoly" and all needed materials.
