Education Matters

Oklahoma State Board of Education member Carlisha Williams Bradley, 1996 Teacher of the Year Stephen Smallwood and 2020 Teacher of the Year Jena Nelson join Supt. Hofmeister for the latest episode of “Education Matters.”

OSDE has joined forces with the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority (OETA) to produce a monthly broadcast, Education Matters.

Hosted by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister, Education Matters focuses on important topics and key initiatives for public education across the state.

On Thurday’s episode, Supt. Hofmeister speaks to Oklahoma Teacher of the Year Jena Nelson, who shares how her high school drama teacher helped her escape the cycle of trauma. Jena’s former teacher also joins the group to talk about changes in education over the years and how he keeps teaching relevant for today’s students.

Tune in this Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m. on OETA, or catch the rebroadcast the following Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

Trainings and Webinars

Beginning Jan. 16: Early Childhood Transition Training

Note: The Lawton training will be rescheduled at a later date.

OSDE is excited to announce free professional development to assist school leaders and teachers in establishing or enhancing school plans, policies and practices supporting families and students as Pre-K and kindergarten students transition to and through school.

OSDE has been working with stakeholders across the state to develop the Oklahoma Early Childhood Transition Toolkit (OECTT), which provides a comprehensive framework for partnering with community members and families to ensure schools are ready to serve the diverse needs of all prekindergarten and kindergarten students. Participants will receive a free copy of the OECTT and have an opportunity to develop a local plan for early childhood transitions and engage in rich discussions with other schools about successful strategies they may be utilizing.

These workshops are designed for school leaders and teachers looking to deepen expertise in transition points across the early childhood/elementary school years. Schools are encouraged to send a small team of 2-3 individuals to the workshops and attend with a community member who may already support students and families who are transitioning to school.

Beginning Jan. 28: 2020 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Training

Together we can ensure that children of Oklahoma get the nutritious meals they need this summer through SFSP or Seamless Summer Option (SSO) under the National School Lunch Program (NSLP).

Schools are ideal Summer Food Service Program sponsors.

There are children 18 years old and under in every county in Oklahoma who need food for the summer months, but several counties do not offer a Summer Feeding Program.

Increasing the number of schools participating as sponsors in the SFSP or SSO will help move toward the goal of having at least one summer feeding program in every county. Please consider sponsoring a site for SFSP this summer.

Required Training

Once it is determined that a school or organization qualifies to become a sponsor, a representative must attend an SFSP training. Available training dates are listed below. All trainings will be held 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Due Feb. 1: Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute Applications

Fellowship applications are now available for Oklahoma 5th- and 8th-grade teachers interested in attending the 2020 Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute in the restored capital city of 18th-century Virginia.

The fifth-grade institute will be held June 6-12, and the eighth-grade institute will be held June 13-19, 2020. The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence coordinates the selection of Oklahoma teachers to participate in the renowned teacher institute.

Applications are available here.

Completed applications are due Feb. 1.

The fellowships cover all program activities, airfare, lodging and most meals. Each teacher also receives a $300 stipend for classroom materials. While at Colonial Williamsburg, Oklahoma teachers will have the opportunity to meet character interpreters of 18th-century people and be immersed in early American history through hands-on activities and reenactments of historic events.

Participants will also meet daily with a peer facilitator to discuss interactive teaching techniques and develop creative lesson plans based on their experiences.

Oklahoma’s 5th-grade teacher institute program is designed for 5th-grade social studies/history teachers and resource teachers such as school librarians or gifted-talented teachers who plan to teach U.S. history in their schools in 2020-21. The middle-school program is open to 8th-grade classroom teachers who teach U.S. history as part of their social studies curriculum.

NEW: Computer Science Rubric

OSDE is excited to share the new computer science rubric aimed at providing guidance for quality computer science programs in schools.

The rubric was significantly shaped by guidance from documents such as the K-12 CS Framework, produced in collaboration with code.org and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA); the Standards for CS Teachers from CSTA; and nine essential elements for computer science from OSDE.

The rubric is aligned to the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science and is organized into three categories:

  • Instruction & Curriculum
  • Student Access & School Culture
  • Professional Learning

The computer science rubric is part of the Oklahoma Champions of Excellence initiative. Learn more about the initiative and access additional Well-Rounded Education rubrics on the Champions of Excellence webpage.
